The Head Injury-LSD and other physiological factors

To know what created the monster may enable us to learn how to prevent it from happening again. Or at least to watch the people who are turning themselves into monsters very, very closely.

I agree. It is almost like researching why cancer occurs.

Personally I've been trying to understand the statistics. Why are so many more crimes, especially sex offenses, perpetrated by men?

I'm not trying to be obnoxious....I mean it as a serious question. If brain injury or drug use is the cause, wouldn't we see more female sex offenders?

Well, male and female brains are wired so differently to begin with, I think we would need to start there.

Would it have been reasonable to send rapists to you for speech therapy?
I am not trying to paint a picture, I am trying to find out the truth. My gf's father had a head injury and he changed into another person beat them senseless, when he had originally been a kind man.
The brain is a mysterious thing and it controls all behavior. Whether this applies to PG, I have no idea. but I don't think we can deny that brain tumors or brain injuries can result in violent and new behaviors.
LSD certainly doesn't create new healthy synapses either LOL.

Interesting that you bring up a brain tumor. When I first saw his photo, I wondered if the lesion on his nose was skin cancer. Nursebeme agreed with me that it looked like it. I wondered if the cancer could have metasticized to the brain. But it is kinda moot, because older photos show he didn't have a lesion at that time, so metastiasis wouldn't have been an issue at the time of the abduction.

BTW for everyone, thanks for the info about a brain injury and drugs causing possible sexual issues. That was new to me.

I can't see this being much of a defense, but it is interesting to note how many criminals suffered head injuries before their deviant behavior began. Perhaps if we (as a society) can learn of the impact these injuries can have, we'll start testing for "hidden" damage and offering early intervention.

I remember watching a program in which criminals and laypeople were hooked up to cat scans, etc. while being shown pictures of violent scenes. The criminals brain waves sped up in a completely different portion of the brain than in the laypeople. You'd never "see" this type of damage/difference on an x-ray or normal cat scan....but it was sure there!

I've also seen studies that the "worst of the worst" often have elevated testosterone levels. I do believe that they should do more studies on repeat offenders looking for any physical causes and possible treatments.

No I don't believe that all criminals have physical problems that cause their behavior. But I do believe that some do, and if we learned the causes we might be able to test for it and begin early intervention before they begin a criminal career.

I always think there are a variety of causes. Yes, it could be nature. I do believe that some are born that way. Yet it has been proven that although every abused child doesn't become criminal, some do. And a large majority of those end up in prison. I also wonder if sometimes physiological problems might be involved sometimes. The study on testoserone was pretty convincing. I also think that a small percentage could be psychiatric. And well drug abuse is not only a crime itself, supporting the habit is pretty well documented as being a cause for some crimes.

But the majority of them know they have the problem before they end up in prison. And most of those aren't working on getting it fixed. I do pretty much give a break if the person has a problem and is really making an effort to find out what the problem is and is trying to fix it or control it. But if they aren't working on it, then prison is the only safe place for them.

There is a book, can't remember the author's last name- something like Robert Restak- where he talks about studies of prisoner's brains having a larger area called the R-complex- subject to greater violence and aggression and poorer language skills. I can attest to the poorer language skills of drug- abuse teenagers I worked with. When I asked them how they would tell off somebody they were angry at- the typical response was: "I wouldn't, I'd just punch 'em"!

Here's an article and picture of PC Garrido's Voice Box, from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/21/garrido.black.box/

A lot has been discussed about PCG's voices and his mental state. I wonder about that - From all appearances it seems that PCG carefully planned out the series of events that lead to his arrest... from his manifesto delivered to the FBI to giving his friend his Voice Box for safe keeping.

So what do you call it when the voices tell you to take responsibility for your actions and deliver your kidnap victims to the authorities?

Besides "Too Little, Too Late", I mean?
