New York man and his daughter are missing somewhere on Katahdin.

Tim Keiderling, 58, and his daughter, 28-year-old Esther Keiderling, both of Ulster Park, New York, were last seen on Katahdin’s Tablelands heading toward the summit about 10:15 a.m. Sunday, according to Baxter State Park.
Park rangers began searching for them Monday morning when they discovered the Keiderlings’ vehicle still in the day-use parking lot, park officials said Tuesday.

No sign of them was found during a search of the Abol and Hunt trails and the Tablelands.

The search expanded Tuesday morning, with more than 30 game wardens along with tracking dogs, three Maine Forest Service helicopters and two Maine Army National Guard helicopters outfitted with infrared thermal imaging assisting park rangers
Both the Abol and Hunt trails have been closed until further notice.

The weather on 1 st June at Katahdin was OKish, with light rain at noon

Katahdin, which translates to "Greatest Mountain" in Penobscot, is the highest mountain in the state of Maine at 5,269 feet.

Katahdin is adjacent to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and the prominent visual feature in the region. Katahdin is held sacred by the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot nations and the geology within and around the monument is central to oral histories, traditions, and cultural practices for each tribal community.

Baxter Peak on Mount Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. For more information about climbing Katahdin visit Baxter State Park's website.

Anyone who was on or around Katahdin’s summit between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday or who has any information about the Keiderlings can call the state police in Houlton at 207-532-5400.

The duo planned the trip around a weekend so they could attempt a hike up Katahdin’s Abol Trail, planning to start — weather permitting — between 6 and 7 a.m.

ETA map showing the Abol trail:

The Abol Trail is a popular hiking route in Baxter State Park that leads to the summit of Katahdin's Baxter Peak. It's known for being the most direct route to the summit from a roadside trailhead, although it's not the easiest hike due to its steep and rocky terrain. The trail starts at Abol Campground and gains 3,982 feet in elevation over a distance of 3.4 miles (plus 1 mile on the Hunt Trail).

Key features of the Abol Trail:
  • Direct Route: It's the shortest route to Baxter Peak from a trailhead.

  • Steep and Rocky: The trail is known for its steep climbs, rocky terrain, and boulder fields.

  • Elevation Gain: It gains a significant 3,982 feet in elevation.

  • Distance: The trail is 3.4 miles long, plus 1 mile on the Hunt Trail to the summit.

  • Scenic Views: The trail offers exposed sections with good views of the surrounding area.

  • Water Sources: Water sources are often unreliable on this trail, so hikers should bring plenty of water.
Difficulty level: Very Strenuous

5.2 miles one-way Elevation gain 4,188 ft

The Hunt trail is one of the more popular trails to the summit of Katahdin. This is because of the outstanding features along the trail such as picturesque Katahdin Stream Falls, the Boulders on Hunt Spur, the traverse of the Tableland, and extensive views in all directions, as 2.4 miles of the trail is above tree line.

Difficulty level: Very Strenuous
Trailhead Parking lot: Katahdin Stream Campground

A bit about Esther, she writes beautifully in Substack

She wrote this a few days ago

I'm on another sales trip with my dad like the one I described in this post and this time we planned the trip around a weekend so that we could climb Mount Katahdin. Tomorrow if it's not pouring with rain we’ll start hiking up the Abol trail between 6 and 7 a.m. If weather prevents us from going up Katahdin we’ll drive back to New York and stop at Walden Pond on the way. I'm a little nervous after everything I've read about the Abol trail but I'm going to do it if weather permits! If you don't see me back on Substack notes again, that's where I am.

A man has been found dead and his daughter remains missing while attempting to hike to the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine, officials said Tuesday

MILLINOCKET, Maine —
A massive search is still underway at Baxter State Park Tuesday for a missing hiker, after her father's body was found near the summit of Mt. Katahdin.

Baxter State Park Rangers were leading the search for Tim Keiderling, 58, and his daughter Esther Keiderling, 28, both of Ulster Park, New York. Rangers said they were last seen on the Katahdin Tablelands on Sunday, June 1 at about 10:15 a.m. headed towards the summit of Maine's highest peak

At about 2:45 this afternoon, a Maine Warden K9 found the body of Tim Keiderling near the summit of Mount Katahdin

Did I miss it - any word on what the weather was doing while they were hiking up?
The weather is so crazy up there on the mountain - it can be totally different than what it is at the campgrounds. Monday, there was snow, sleet and wicked wind at the summit (per other's posts in some hiking groups, so, I will put IMO on this bc I am not linking to anything) - many people turned back that day. They hiked Sunday, and it wasn't great that day either. But for her to survive up there through the latest weather would be pretty unlikely :( IMO

MILLINOCKET, Maine —
Search teams have now found the bodies of both hikers who were missing on Mount Katahdin.

Baxter State Park Rangers announced just before 3 p.m. Wednesday that they found the body of Esther Keiderling, 28, at about 1 p.m. in a wooded area between two trails.

climbed this mtn years ago in decent fall weather. the rangers would actually close the trails if the weather was kicking up and I know now there are day permits so you cannot even start without a ticket. even on the "easier" trails there are some edges which would not be good in dark or bad weather. they require you to have lamps in case you wind up somewhere in the dark. this article makes me cry a little.

Why would she go away from the trail and be far from her dad ? I fail to see what could have happened to her father first, an then her. was the weather still that unstable and cold ?
Did he have a health issue eg stroke due to the difficulty of the hike and did she leave to get help?
