That was my first thought.
That was my first thought.
Bumping...
I got vibes of foul play at the bar. This may be a stupid reach, but Emmie could've been bullied if he didn't know anyone at the bar? Or maybe he DID know people at the bar and there was some kind of confrontation or altercation? Maybe a coverup? Emmie was a big guy, but if he was surrounded by multiple people in a fight, he could've been unconscious and died from injuries. He was 68 years-old! And then he could've been loaded into the car and pushed into the river? Or buried somewhere near the river. We need one of those Youtube detectives with drones or a boat to look into it. Back then, a name like Emmie seems more feminine, to me. The Johnny Cash song, "A boy named Sue" was popular around that time, I believe. Some people might have given him 🤬🤬🤬🤬 about it? Just some thoughts.

I think Johnny Cash's recording of that song (written by Shel Silverstein) actually came out a few years later - but it was a good one!

My daddy left home when I was three,
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me.
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now I don't blame him cause he run and hid,
But the meanest thing he ever did, was before he left, he went and named me Sue...

Another newspaper entry here by the Elizabethton Star on August 31, 1965:

Says about the same thing but lists his age as 69, FBI involvement and a reward of $1,600.
"Three suspects have been arrested and are now being questioned in connection with the disappearance of Smith. They were arrested after a tipster called following the announcement of the reward money."
