KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knox County Sheriff's Office reported that a fisherman discovered a body Saturday morning on an embankment on the Tennessee River.

On Monday, the sheriff's office released sketches of the person found. According to the medical examiner, the body belong to a woman.

"No telling how far this body traveled," the sheriff's office said.

According to KCSO, the man discovered the body around 10:30 a.m. on an embankment near the 5100 block of Buckhead Trail.

KCSO and the Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene along with medical examiners.

The body has not yet been identified. This investigation is ongoing at this time.

Neighbors said they have seen all kinds of things float down the river to their docks, but never a body.

If you have any information about this incident, you can call Detectives at (865) 215-2243 or email [email protected].

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is still working to identify the body found on Saturday. Acting Chief of Detectives Brad Hall said the body was likely in the water for several weeks before it was found by two men fishing in West Knox County.

Dr. Bass said it is not uncommon for floods to wash out new evidence, often leading to the discovery of missing people or others no one knew had vanished.

"You have someone who is killed and thrown in the water and they get hung up on a stick or a root or something like that. As the water increases in a flood, they get washed out," said Dr. Bass. "I wish we knew how many bodies were out there just waiting for us to find. There are bodies out there."

The TVA said parts of rivers in East Tennessee rose several feet during the recent floods. The water level on Norris Lake went up 30 feet with all the rain.

Folks that work to keep the river clean said anything on land when the water level rose was brought back into the river when it went down.

"When it was flooded, it came past the trees. So you can imagine any litter that was thrown down off the highway, that was going to get pulled down off the river," said Kathleen Gibi with Keep the TN River Beautiful. "Eighty percent of the litter in the river comes from litter that was thrown down on land."

"No telling how far this body traveled," the sheriff's office said.

I'm guessing this is not the first body that has come from the river. So she was in the water 'several weeks'. If she came down the Holston she could have been from anywhere from Virginia all the way to Tenneesee if my map-reading is correct. If she came down the French Broad she could have originated from North Carolina? Are there any locks on either of those rivers that would have made such long distances less likely?

i also wondered if this was veverly mitchell, missing from Georgia since Christmas 2017
Veverly is not on the rule out list but since her NamUs has been down, it must not be her. No new exclusions. The same 7 as in post #8.
