Police find unidentified burned body and missing Morristown man's vehicle

Update

Authorities are investigating after police found an unidentified burned body and a missing Morristown man's vehicle on the bed of a lake in Grainger County.

A hunter reported a suspicious vehicle on the Cherokee Lake bed near Bean Station in the 5500 block of Highway 11W.

The man reported that he saw a silver Mazda parked on the bed for a couple of days while duck hunting. Authorities discovered the vehicle belonged to a man who had been reported in Morristown days earlier, 26-year-old Skyler Etgen.

Deputies discovered a cell phone and wallet and called two K9 teams. A K9 discovered a burned body a short distance from the vehicle.

The body has yet to be positively identified as of Wednesday and has been sent to Knox County for an autopsy.

The tag number of the vehicle was run through NCIC by dispatchers and it was determined the vehicle belonged to Etgen.

Following the discovery of Etgen’s 2010 Mazda 3, a foot search was conducted by Wyckoff and Cruze. According to reports, the officers recovered a wallet and cell phone. Identification in the wallet reportedly matched the registration of the vehicle.

Two K9 officers were dispatched to the scene. Both K9s alerted to a burned body located inside the wood line adjacent to where the vehicle was located.

Updated - Feb. 3. 2022

"Investigators with the Morristown Police Department confirmed that a missing Morristown man was found dead in Grainger County.

Skyler Etgen’s parents reported him missing on Jan. 27 after they hadn’t heard from him since he left for work two days prior, according to Chief of Police Roger Overholt.

The 26-year-old’s vehicle was found after officials responded to a call of a car parked on a lake bottom. The witness told investigators it had been there for several days. The wallet and keys belonging to Etgen were found near the car."

Earhart said 4th Judicial District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn had asked the TBI to help the Grainger County Sheriff's Office with the death investigation.

"His body has been sent for an autopsy," a statement by TBI spokeswoman Leslie Earhart reads. "At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing."

Oh no. This is so sad. I tried running different scenarios through my mind but it's too upsetting. Though I would like to know if he was burned before or after he was killed, because I'm praying that he didn't have to experience the agony of that, at least.
