A dog has been hailed a hero for saving his owner from a rattlesnake, taking a nasty bite to the face in the process.

The golden retriever named Todd was on a hike with his owner Paula Goodwin in Anthem, Arizona, on Friday when the pair came across a rattlesnake.

Just as Goodwin was about to unknowingly step on the snake, Todd spotted it and jumped in front of his owner's leg.

Unfortunately his heroism did was not without consequences as the rattler bit him in the face, causing his cheek to swell dramatically.

Goodwin posted photos of the recovering retriever on her Facebook with the caption: 'My hero of a puppy Todd saved me.'

What a good boy Todd is. Dog’s are amazing creatures. I’m so glad this story has a happy ending. Hope you have a speedy recovery Todd.

Had a young cat named "Adolescent" that got bit by a 6 ft. rattlesnake in our backyard right by the pool. I witnessed cat
walking backwards awkwardly and ran out the back door to see
what happened. Yup there was the huge snake still ready to get
her again. ran back inside and grabbed a .22 rifle and pumped
6 shots into it before it gave up. Rushed cat to an after hours
vet up the road- luckily he was still in office. Gave her anti-venom
shot, took her home and she never had the first symptom of the bite even though she had distinct fang marks on her leg.
We think she pulled back so fast snake couldn't inject her with
poison.

“A gutsy and heroic golden retriever that saved his owner from a rattlesnake seems to be on the way to a quick recovery after he took a horrendous bite to the face on Friday.

His owner, Paula Goodwin, took to her Facebook page on Monday to post a photo of her golden retriever, named Todd, playing in the park.

'Thank you so much seriously wow Todd is recovering so well this was yesterday at the park. Thank you for all the sweet kind words,' Goodwin wrote, in part.

'Todd for sure is my hero and I feel I have to say that to the man up stairs. Surely is watching out for me too. Praise him too.'

I'm so glad to hear Todd is recuperating well and getting over his
ordeal.
Looking at his poor swollen face reminds me of a similar experience with my poor young horse, Rosie. Rosie was/is a
very curious horse with not always the best common sense.
I was keeping her and her buddy in a big pasture next to a
known swampy area and the area was known as home
to Cottonmouth Water Moccasins.
Well, sure enough one day I show up to feed and Rosie's whole
side of her head and nose looked like a hippo head- so distorted
and swollen. I knew it was a moccasin bite because a few weeks
prior I had chased and killed 2 large moccasins right outside the
pasture. And as I was chasing the snakes, Rosie was running right alongside the action wanting to check out the snakes.
She had no fear and was simply curious.
Anyway, the short story is, other than the tremendous swelling
she was fine. The vet said just watch her closely and let her know
if she wasn't ok. She had the fang marks on the hard part of her
face. But her nostrils, luckily did not swell closed, which is
a major concern.
Poisonous snakes are always a concern around here if you have animals so
we're always cognizant of any bites.

I am so glad you weren’t hurt and Rosie survived. I couldn’t handle living with lots of snakes in the wild around me I am terrified of them. The filter in my fish tank broke at the weekend so I went to the aquatic shop to buy one. I didn’t realise it has been taken over and the new opener had started selling REPTILES.

I went in and turned the corner and was confronted by a six foot boa constrictor called Lucy that was out of her tank and I nearly screamed the place down. I didn’t take up the offer to pet her but she was a beautiful but very scary creature.

We have wild snakes in Scotland called Adders but thankfully unless you’re into hill walking it’s unlikely you will meet one.

You would be perpetually nervous if you lived near me. I've gotten
used to it but am still cautious- always watch where you put your
feet and hands- and never walk around after dark in bare feet.

I had a boa incident once when a client had a huge one in his
home, and silly me, I admired how beautiful the snake was
cause I could tell his owner was quite enamored with 'it'.
the owner asked if I wanted to 'er, hold it- which I agreed to
and soon learned it meant- he wrapped this HUGE thing
around my neck and shoulders and I about died inside. All I could think of was what my obituary would say- died by constriction.

Won't do that again.
