*Sentencing Hearing (@ 9am MT) - NM - Saul, newborn (Jan. 7, 2022 found in dumpster behind Rig Outfitters Jan. 2022, Hobbs; newborn is in stable condition at Lubbock hospital) - *Alexis Nicole Avila (18/now 20) arrested & charged (1/8/22) & arraigned (willful) (1/12/22) with attempt to commit a felony, to wit: 1st degree murder (Felony Murder) & attempt to commit a felony, to wit: 1st degree murder (Willful & Deliberate) was changed (3/1/22) & charged (2/8/22) & arraigned (3/14/22) to abuse of a child (results in great bodily harm) with intentional or recklessly & attempted 1st degree murder. Plead not guilty to previous willful & deliberate charge on 1/12/22. No pleading entered on abuse charge on 3/14/22. On house-arrest.
Trial began on 4/11/23 & ended 4/14/23 with closing arguments. Judge William G. W. Shoobridge presiding. Jury deliberated for 2 hours & found Avila guilty of all charges. Sentencing hearing on 5/1/23.

4/14/23 Friday, Trail Day 4: Closing arguments. The jury came back with a verdict just after 4pm after more than two hours of deliberations. They found her guilty of child abuse causing great bodily harm & attempted 1st degree murder. Avila is set to be sentenced on 5/1/23 @ 2pm by a judge. She faces at least 18 years in prison. Sentencing hearing time changed to 9am.

*Jury Selection set to begin (@ 9am CT) – TX – Antonio & Dawn Armstrong (both 42) (July 29, 2016, Houston) – *Antonio “A.J.” Armstrong, Jr. (16 @ time of crime/17/now 23) arrested (7/29/16), charged (8/1/16) & arraigned (7/26/17) with capital murder. Plead not guilty. $200K bond. Out on bond 4/12/17.
Trial started on 4/2/19 & ended on 4/26/19. Jury: 7 women & 5 men on jury with 1 woman alternate (Juror #12 excused 4/5/19). 4/26/19: after ~20 hours of deliberations verdict was 8 Guilty & 4 Not guilty. Judge declares mistrial.
2nd Re-trial began on 10/3/22 & ended on 10/21/22. Jury: 6 women & 6 men. Jurors were sequestered during deliberations. After ~18 hours of deliberations verdict was 4 for Guilty & 8 not guilty. Judge Kelli Johnson declared (another) mistrial.
3rd Re-trial was set to begin on 2/24/23 with jury selection was continued to 5/1/23 & will take about 6 weeks & trial to begin in June.

2/8/23 Update: Jury selection on 2/24/23 has been cancelled. Pretrial hearing instead on 2/24/23. A date has been set for A.J. Armstrong's third trial for capital murder in the deaths of his parents. This comes after a judge ruled last month that the trial will remain in Harris County after another judge filed a motion to change the location. A new jury will be selected starting 5/1/23, with the trial slated to follow in June (no dates yet) depending how long jury selection takes. Prosecutors & defense attorneys agreed to an unusually extensive jury selection process. That process will be a voir dire, which means instead of questioning a jury in a group, each person will be talked to individually. This method is usually used in a death penalty case. In the third trial, the jury selection process is expected to take six weeks.

*Trial continues (Day 4) (@ 9am ET) - New York – E. Jean Carrol’s battery, emotional distress, rape & a 2nd act of defamation (for Trump's comments on Truth Social in October) lawsuit against Donald John Trump.
The lawsuit for defamation & under a New York law which allows alleged victims of sexual assault to sue over alleged crimes outside the usual statute of limitations.
Trump lawyers: Joseph Tacopina, Alina Habba & W. Perry Brandt. U.S. District of Manhattan / U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan
Carroll has sued Trump for defamation & for rape, saying Trump turned a friendly encounter at a luxury Manhattan department store in late 1995 or early 1996 into a violent rape.
Trial began on 4/25/23 with jury selection. 9 jurors (6 jurors & 3 alternates) (3 women & 6 men). (see post #108 page 6 for jury info).
Trial expected to last 5 to 10 days.
Defamation charges postponed by Judge Lewis Kaplan on 3/30/23. Carroll's first defamation lawsuit against Trump was filed in November 2019. But that case has been put on hold while Trump argues that a federal law protects him from being sued for defamation for comments he made while president.

4/28/23 Friday, Trial Day 10: State witnesses: Detective Forney has been recalled. Texas Ranger Adam Russell.
state prosecutors attempting to admit new evidence outside the presence of the jury. The evidence includes four pieces of video & audio footage from interviews with Maya Maxwell, Ginell McDonough & Marks' family conducted by Temple Police Detective Corey Powell. Marks has to review this information in order to prepare for cross examination of witnesses. In response, Marks asked the judge to squash the in-person subpoena for Ginell saying there's a transportation conflict for her to fly in from Tennessee leaving her kids by themselves. The judge denied Marks request * asked Marks to work with his wife to make arrangements.

4/28/23 Friday, Trial Day 1: In an opening statement, Crown attorney Isobel Keeley said the court will hear evidence showing the murder was random, but DNA results will prove Ali sexually assaulted her. A B.C. Supreme Court trial can expect to hear evidence that shows a 13-year-old girl from Burnaby, B.C., was passing through a neighborhood park when she was dragged off a pathway into the forest by Ibrahim Ali, sexually assaulted and strangled, the Crown prosecutor told the jury Friday.
Crown witness: RCMP Const. Richard Huggins, who was assigned to the Burnaby detachment in July 2017, said he was dispatched to search for the missing girl shortly after midnight on July 19.
The trial is expected to take about two months and will hear testimony from about 50 people, including civilians, police and expert witnesses, Keeley told the jury in opening statement.

4/18/23 Update: Villalon is set to plead guilty on 5/4/23, her attorney & court officials confirmed Tuesday. Villalon who has been jailed 1,051 days, has agreed to plead guilty to an injury to a child charge with a deadly weapon finding in exchange for a recommendation from the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office that she be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
*Lorenzo Gonzales (28/now 30) – Plead guilty on 3/20/23 & sentenced to 2 concurrent 10 years in prison. Must serve at least half of his 10 year term before he can seek parole. He also has been placed under an immigration detainer & is expect to be deposited after he serves his prison term.
*Sentencing Hearing (@ 9am CT) - MI – Egypt Covington (27) (June 23, 2017, found shot & killed in her house, Belleville) *Shane Lamar Evans (28 @ time of crime/31/now 34) arrested & charged (12/18/20), recharged (3/23/21) & arraigned (4/1/21) with 1 count of felony murder & 1 count of 1st degree home invasion. Plead not guilty. Held without bond.
Trial was set to begin on 12/11/23 but plead guilty (4/10/23) to a plea deal & will testify against Groom & Moore. Was found competent to stand trial (2/28/23).

4/14/23 Friday, Trail Day 4: Closing arguments. The jury came back with a verdict just after 4pm after more than two hours of deliberations. They found her guilty of child abuse causing great bodily harm & attempted 1st degree murder. Avila is set to be sentenced on 5/1/23 @ 2pm by a judge. She faces at least 18 years in prison. Sentencing hearing time changed to 9am.

2/8/23 Update: Jury selection on 2/24/23 has been cancelled. Pretrial hearing instead on 2/24/23. A date has been set for A.J. Armstrong's third trial for capital murder in the deaths of his parents. This comes after a judge ruled last month that the trial will remain in Harris County after another judge filed a motion to change the location. A new jury will be selected starting 5/1/23, with the trial slated to follow in June (no dates yet) depending how long jury selection takes. Prosecutors & defense attorneys agreed to an unusually extensive jury selection process. That process will be a voir dire, which means instead of questioning a jury in a group, each person will be talked to individually. This method is usually used in a death penalty case. In the third trial, the jury selection process is expected to take six weeks.

state prosecutors attempting to admit new evidence outside the presence of the jury. The evidence includes four pieces of video & audio footage from interviews with Maya Maxwell, Ginell McDonough & Marks' family conducted by Temple Police Detective Corey Powell. Marks has to review this information in order to prepare for cross examination of witnesses. In response, Marks asked the judge to squash the in-person subpoena for Ginell saying there's a transportation conflict for her to fly in from Tennessee leaving her kids by themselves. The judge denied Marks request * asked Marks to work with his wife to make arrangements.

4/28/23 Friday, Trial Day 1: In an opening statement, Crown attorney Isobel Keeley said the court will hear evidence showing the murder was random, but DNA results will prove Ali sexually assaulted her. A B.C. Supreme Court trial can expect to hear evidence that shows a 13-year-old girl from Burnaby, B.C., was passing through a neighborhood park when she was dragged off a pathway into the forest by Ibrahim Ali, sexually assaulted and strangled, the Crown prosecutor told the jury Friday.
Crown witness: RCMP Const. Richard Huggins, who was assigned to the Burnaby detachment in July 2017, said he was dispatched to search for the missing girl shortly after midnight on July 19.
The trial is expected to take about two months and will hear testimony from about 50 people, including civilians, police and expert witnesses, Keeley told the jury in opening statement.

4/18/23 Update: Villalon is set to plead guilty on 5/4/23, her attorney & court officials confirmed Tuesday. Villalon who has been jailed 1,051 days, has agreed to plead guilty to an injury to a child charge with a deadly weapon finding in exchange for a recommendation from the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office that she be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
*Lorenzo Gonzales (28/now 30) – Plead guilty on 3/20/23 & sentenced to 2 concurrent 10 years in prison. Must serve at least half of his 10 year term before he can seek parole. He also has been placed under an immigration detainer & is expect to be deposited after he serves his prison term.
