8/16/24 Update: A request came Friday afternoon in a letter from prosecutors who said they & defense attorneys sought a hearing but did not say why. The same letter also requested an extension of time for the defense to respond to pretrial motions. The judge granted both requests & set the hearing for 3pm at U.S. District Court in Central Islip on 8/19/24. The purpose of the hearing was not immediately clear. It is speculated that Santos is expected to plead guilty to “multiple counts” of his sprawling fraud indictment at a hearing Monday, according to a source familiar with the case.
8/19/24 Update: Santos plead guilty Monday in federal court to two of the charges. The Long Island Republican faces a mandatory two-year minimum sentence after pleading guilty to wire fraud & aggravated identity theft. Santos admitted filing bogus reports with the Federal Election Commission, embezzling campaign funds, charging credit cards without authorization & fraudulently obtaining unemployment benefits. While he pleaded guilty to only two of the 23 counts, he confessed to taking part in a wide range of conduct that Judge Seybert can use when determining the final sentence. Judge Joanna Seybert estimated the term could range from six to eight years behind bars when he is sentenced on 2/7/25. Santos also agreed to pay nearly $374K in restitution & is subject to a forfeiture order of more than $205K.
1/3/25 Update: Santos asked a judge on Friday to delay his sentencing in his federal fraud case. Santos is currently scheduled to be sentenced on 2/7/25 in Central Islip, New York, after pleading guilty to federal fraud, campaign finance & embezzlement charges. His attorneys asked the judge to postpone the sentencing by six months, until August, to give Santos more time to make money so he can meet the nearly $600,000 he owes in restitution & forfeiture, according to a new court filing. "Mr. Santos now has a viable path to making meaningful progress on satisfying his obligations," his lawyers stated in a motion filed on Friday, citing the launch of a new podcast, "Pants on Fire with George Santos." Federal prosecutors did not immediately respond, though the defense noted that the government opposes a delay. He is required to pay the restitution 30 days before his sentencing on Feb. 7 & could face additional sanctions if he fails to pay in time.
1/29/25 Update: Santos had his February sentencing delayed until 4/25/25, a judge ruled Wednesday. 4/4/25 Update: Justice Dept. is seeking a 87 month sentence for Santos [see post #154 for more info].
