In the series of text messages shown in court Friday, Haobsh wrote several unanswered texts asking for updates on March 23 & then wrote that he “rented an 18 wheeler with forklift & took care of it all.” He testified that he called the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department to report the confession in the early morning hours of March 25 & said he was scared for his life in case Haobsh decided to “come after me.” He also said he talked to his brother, who is a judge & former district attorney, before calling law enforcement & that he & his brother “agreed it was important to report.” Haobsh was arrested at gunpoint by law enforcement in San Diego County March 25, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. GUILTY - NE - Sydney Loofe, 24, brutally murdered, Lincoln, 15 Nov 2017 #4

7/2/21 Friday, Day 3 of sentencing: Defense witnesses: Eli McBride, an FBI special agent who worked on the case. Dr. Kirk Newring, who did a psychological evaluation of Boswell. Boswell was apologetic & emotional as she pleaded with the three-judge panel to not give her a death sentence. Her team pointed to letters from Saline County Jail inmates saying she’s been a blessing. She thinks she can do that in the prison for women in York. The state put documents into the record that included coded jailhouse messages between Trail & Boswell, that they say attempted to align with each other's testimony. They also say Boswell sought a relationship with Trail & has messaged men & women in jail in exchange for money. Boswell focused much of her statement on her young daughter, saying she’ll later learn what she did, and that still, she wants to have a relationship with her. Closing arguments were not made in court, and instead will be written statements that are due in August 6 & rebuttals on 8/13/21. The three-judge panel must later unanimously agree for Boswell to be sentenced to death. Sentencing hearing on 11/8/21 @ 10am.
11/2/21 Update: Judge denies Boswell’s request to wear civilian clothes at her sentencing. noting that no jurors will be present to see her in prison jumpsuit & shackles.
11/8/21 Update: Three judges, Judge Vicky Johnson, Judge Darla S. Ideus & Judge Peter C. Bataillon have been weighing the prosecution & defense’s testimony since Boswell’s three-judge panel a few months ago. Bataillon dissented from the other two judges, saying the case was not strong enough that the killing manifested exceptional depravity. The decision needed to be unanimous. Boswell will serve life in prison & will not receive the death penalty.
*Aubrey C. Trail (51/now 54) – Found guilty of all charges 7/8/19. A 3-judge panel will hear penalty phase. 11/15/19: Judge denies Trail’s death penalty challenge. Judge denies motion for new trial. Sentenced on 6/9/21 to death. 9/23/21: Filed an appeal.
