A British tourist has gone missing in Turkey after celebrating New Year's Eve with his wife.

Gary John Long, 58, was last seen on New Year's Day at around 1pm.

He told panicked wife Nadia Faye Maria he was going to a market but never returned.

Now police in the Antalya area have started an investigation into his disapperance.

The probe continues.

It is unclear at this stage where in the UK Mr Long is from.

None of the man's family have spoken publicly in the UK as yet.

Alanya, in the Antalya province of Turkey, is popular with Brits.

The resort town boasts wide beaches, luxurious hotels and historic landmarks.

It's on Turkey's south coast.

Now police in the Antalya area, who started a search Friday, say that they have found a body in a banana field.

They refused to comment on whether the death was being treated as suspicious until the autopsy has been completed.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Turkey and are in contact with the Turkish authorities.”
