Nationwide protests have taken place in Turkey after the burned body of missing, 20-year-old student Ozgecan Aslan was found in a riverbed Friday. She had gone missing Wednesday in Mersin, Southern Turkey.

'Three suspects have been arrested in the murder and it's alleged she fought off a sexual assault before being murdered by the driver of a bus she had caught to go home.

'Now, a nation is protesting -- viewing her murder, according to one petition, as a symbol of the growing trend of violence against women in Turkey. The government is promising to punish her attackers and do more to protect others like her.'

Earlier this month:

A Turkish court has sentenced three men to life in prison over the murder and attempted rape of a 20-year-old student... Özgecan Aslan was bludgeoned and stabbed to death in February as she returned home on a minibus from a shopping trip.

The court sentenced the bus driver, Ahmet Suphi Altındöken, to aggravated life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for attempting to rape Aslan and then murdering her... His father, Necmettin Altındöken, and a friend, Fatih Gökçe, received the same terms after being found guilty of helping him burn and dispose the body.

The aggravated life term is the highest punishment in Turkey after it abolished the death penalty in 2002, and means maximum jail terms with tougher conditions.
