Police chief says 2 Dallas PD officers shot while responding to call

Two Dallas Police Department officers are recovering after being shot Thursday morning.

The two officers were shot around 11 a.m. while responding to a call about a domestic violence shooting at a home on Bonita Avenue, near the Central Expressway and Henderson Avenue.

Just after 1:30 p.m., Chief Garcia said SWAT went into the home on Bonita Ave. where officers were initially called to.

Officers found a male and female dead inside the home.

Police did not say if either was the person who shot the officers, but Garcia offered prayers for the dead female and her family.

This comes just days after Dallas PD Officer Mitchell Penton was killed after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. He was blocking a crash scene when the driver slammed into the scene.

Chief Garcia thanked Dallas Fire-Rescue for providing cover so that other officers could safely help the wounded officers.

"And again just continue to pray for our officers that are wounded and for the men and women of this police department who continue to show up every day regardless of the threats that they may encounter," he said.

This is in my wider neighborhood of East Dallas. Neighbors state this was a child custody issue involving CPS. A neighbor next door to the scene posted video of part of the incident including the shot officers being helped away. Apparently the man shot the woman then himself. The 6yo child is safe.

Edited to add link to report that includes neighbor's video:

SWAT officers have entered a home in the uptown section of Dallas where a man who barricaded himself inside was found dead, believed to be from a self inflicted gunshot. It ends a nearly 3 hour standoff after the suspect shot and wounded 2 DPD officers responding to a shooting.

Suspect shot and killed wife before firing at officers, Dallas police chief says | wfaa.com

The man who shot at two officers Thursday first shot and killed his wife, according to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia.

The two officers were transported to the hospital after they were shot and are expected to recover, Garcia said.

Garcia said officers responded to the shooting call around 11 a.m Thursday at the 5300 block of Bonita Avenue. The suspect fired at officers as they approached the home.

When SWAT made it inside the home, they found 57-year-old Sergio Sanchez and his wife both dead from gunshot wounds. There were no shots fired by officers during this incident, according to Garcia

Garcia said Sanchez had an "extensive violent criminal history" and domestic issues with his wife.

Sanchez called the police to tell them he had killed his wife and that he didn't want to go back to prison. Someone who knew Sanchez also called police to tell them he was going to "shoot it out with the police" when they arrived, Garcia said.

In about two-and-a-half weeks as police chief, Garcia said there have been two domestic violence-related murder-suicides in Dallas. He said, "we need to work together with our community" to make sure victims and survivors know there are resources for them.

"We need to work harder to ensure they know that," Garcia said. "There's a lot more than law enforcement that needs to be involved here."
