I think mass shooting against random strangers get more attention than mass shootings over personal disputes.

And if it's gang-related, it gets little or no coverage at all unless a non-gang person was in the crossfire.

Yes, in my mind, I included that as "personal disputes." It's the random attacks that make the news.

I can understand the difference in coverage. By their nature, gangs are violent with each other. It's not news. But it's news when random people going about their law-abiding days are attacked.

Not that gang violence is okay, to be clear.

"I have a confession to make. I killed a man and a baby girl today. In Target. In the Target parking lot. I shot them both, because I’m Jesus," Nieneker said after the shooting.

According to the arrest affidavit, he said he did not have a mental health diagnosis. He said he had not used any drugs in the past week, or had any alcohol since August 2024.

"I realized I was Jesus, and I had to grab my gun and shoot a couple of people to save us all. I killed these people out of love, not out of hate… I realized that I had to kill a couple of people to set everyone free, so I did it. It was just random, I guess. It was like I was just trying to get anyone I could," Nieneker said.

According to Nieneker, he was given the gun by a family member. ...

Nieneker admitted he knew the difference between right and wrong. He admitted everything he did was wrong, the arrest affidavit states.

Well, that's the bar for whether you can be held accountable for your actions in most places. It doesn't matter if he thought he was Jesus at the time. We'll see him in a courtroom.

The bar for sanity is very simple most places. Did you know it was wrong? Did you know what you were doing would kill people? He answered yes to both.

His criminal history is detailed in the article below. In 2015 and 2016 he repeatedly violently assaulted his (two) girlfriends and in 2019 he attacked his roommate. He told one of the girlfriends:

“I know how to hurt someone and not leave marks.”

He left plenty of marks each time. His behavior before his latest crime:

A coworker who asked not to be named for fear of being fired told KUT News that Nieneker said on Saturday that he had not eaten in several days to become closer to his “higher power.” The coworker said Nieneker abruptly left his shift that day to attend a Bible study.

A different coworker provided KUT News with a group message they said Nieneker sent early Sunday morning.

“The Truth prevails,” the coworker said Nieneker wrote, “Let me Help you Be set Free from Your Self <3.”

Well, here we are in 2025. Shooting concerns at schools, concerts, bars, churches, Walmart, and now Target. It's the Wild West. Where is this country headed?
