Family of four severely burned after suspect fired gun into their car, igniting fireworks | Daily Mail Online

Family of four, including two toddlers, severely burned in 'road rage incident' after suspect fired gun into their car igniting fireworks they'd just bought

  • The family was driving on Highway 249 near Ella, Texas, around 9.30pm on Thursday when they got into an altercation with a male driver
  • The father got out to speak to the other driver, who brandished a gun
  • When the family tried to drive away, the other driver shot into their car, setting off fireworks and causing the car to catch fire
  • Both toddlers, ages one and two, are in critical condition and were taken by Life Flight to Galveston
  • The parents were also burned, but their statuses are unknown

Thanks for posting the videos Tbone. It’s awful to think how terrifying it had to be inside the truck as the bullets were shot at them, fireworks going off, smoke & fire in an enclosed area like that. That poor family, especially those little kids. They all have a long road ahead of them I’m afraid. Hope they catch this moron ASAP.

Prayers to this family! Those poor babies :( I hope they all make a quick and full recovery. What a terrifying ordeal.

Catch this guy quickly, he is clearly disturbed! It said in the article witnesses think there were other people in his vehicle too. I hope that's true and someone talks.

Ya, I read somewhere that a witness stated there were a woman and kids in the shooter’s vehicle. Jacka$$!

Anytime I see someone driving aggressively or erratically, I slow down and steer clear. You never know who is carrying a gun these days. Same thing in public, in a store, etc. Don't make eye contact and get away.

Oh how I wish the dad had not chosen to stop and speak to the shooter! Living in Miami for decades taught me to ignore and move on.

To be clear, I'm not blaming the dad as he had no way of knowing he was dealing with a disturbed man. I suspect he realized it too late.
Both drivers eventually pulled into a gas station, where the second driver pulled out a gun. The father attempted to drive off, but when the second driver fired toward his truck, the gunshots struck the vehicle and set off fireworks that the family was carrying, police said.
Entire family in critical condition after road rage shooting set off fireworks in car

Thanks to the good Samaritans who ran to help:
Two kids are still alive, thanks to three young men who pulled the tots from a vehicle caught in a fiery road rage shooting.

The day after the Fourth of July, 17-year-old Desmond Davis, 21-year-old Jason Butler and 24-year-old Marquis Brown were playing basketball and video games.

It turns out hoops and gaming are the only things they can do to suppress the haunting images of two screaming toddlers with burns all over their bodies.
...
As they were driving along Highway 249, they saw a car on fire. They immediately noticed the child car seats and jumped out to help.

"She just kept yelling, 'My baby, my baby,'" Butler said. "I told her, 'Ma'am, we need to step away from the car because the car is going to blow up.' Probably two seconds after that, that's when the fireworks started coming out."
Houston road rage incident ignites car; family rescued by 3 young men

I'm sorry that the kids were punished for the men's actions and I hope LE finds the shooter ASAP as he's a danger to everyone on the road.

I can’t imagine how freakin terrifying (and painful) it was to endure being in such an enclosed space with fireworks shooting off. What a nightmare for this poor family.....those poor little kids.

Road rage shooter who caused fireworks to explode in family's car surrenders, sheriff says

(Via KHOU 11)

That's a relief!

Any word on the family? I hope they are improving!

ETA from the link:

Bayron J. Rivera, 18, surrendered to investigators, the sheriff said. He is charged with four counts of aggravated assault in the Fourth of July shooting.

And:
Investigators are tentatively scheduled to speak at a press conference Monday at 10 a.m.

Maybe we will hear more about the family's condition soon.

Let’s give the boys who got the toddlers out of the car a Congratulatory Thank You! Sure hope the city honors them too. In this day and age of the stigma of “people won‘t get involved” these young men did a super heroic
Job.

Yes absolutely! Praying that both toddlers pull through and they get to meet their heroes later.

I’m so relieved that this 🤬🤬🤬 is in custody! Those poor children are so little and have such a long, painful road of healing ahead, along with their parents.

I wish people who have grievances against others would just take a deep breath and think before they react, especially when they have an AR15 within their reach, FGS. (That’s what the DM stated in their article.)

I really despise the direction we are heading as a society. It’s freakin scary.

Much more about what happened is in this link - I can only quote 10% so y'all have to read the rest for yourselves.
The 18-year-old accused gunman, Bayron Rivera, told investigators he was angry with the father of two young children because he called Rivera a vulgar name, prosecutors said during a probable cause hearing Monday. Rivera’s 16-year-old girlfriend was with him in the vehicle during the time of the incident.

According to prosecutors, the other driver pulled out in front of Rivera while exiting a Fiesta Mart parking lot at West Mt. Houston Road and Veterans Memorial Drive, after buying fireworks. The two exchanged words at a nearby traffic light, authorities said.

Afterward, prosecutors said, Rivera briefly followed the father’s pickup, which turned into a Walgreens. Rivera’s girlfriend told prosecutors they went to Rivera’s home for a few minutes before the defendant told her they were going back out.
Prosecutors: Fourth of July road-rage incident lasted about 20 minutes

The upshot is that the shooter is in deep doo doo since after the altercation he apparently went home and got his gun, which was an AR-15 rifle, and went back out looking for the family.

Did the tentatively planned press conference happen?

ETA: just saw in the link @MsMarple provided that yes, the presser happened.

So the girlfriend went back out with him? I would have stayed at the house!

From July 9, mother and one child apparently discharged from hospital:

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas family who was burned after fireworks exploded in their car following a road rage shooting says their two small children are still recovering, but that one of them is almost unrecognizable.

The family tells sister station KTRK in Houston that their 1-year-old underwent surgery Monday and is recovering.

The father and the 2-year-old remain hospitalized, and the family says the burns from the explosion left one of the children unrecognizable.
