Fifteen years after drowning her five children in the bathtub of her suburban Houston home, Andrea Yates lives a reclusive life in a Texas mental health facility and frequently watches videos of her children laughing and playing, sources close to Yates tell PEOPLE.

I remember this case like it was yesterday. My heart breaks for this poor woman. What a tragic miscarriage of justice and ignorance. She was profoundly mentally ill. Her husband was nothing more than a Duggar-esque "proliferate and create a Christian army" creep. I wish she hadn't been so isolated by their backwards religious paranoia. He should have been charged as an accessory and sterilized. She was in no position to be cognizant of her actions. That deep into mental illness, she had no chance of exerting any of her free will. Besides, she'd been conditioned for years that her job was to lay back and spread her legs. That's the Quiverfull (Duggar) way. Her care was neglected every step of the way. So much more is known and understood now about PPD and Postpartum Psychosis that I wonder if things would have been handled more rationally and humanely if this had happened today. Although I maintain that enough was known about it at the time of the deaths that this case never should have resulted in a conviction. I hope she has been able to find some measure of peace in her life. Those poor children.

It's Texas. Not a lot has changed including people's opinions. This situation could have been avoided and that makes it doubly tragic.

ETA: The trial and the verdict may have eased some people along in their understanding. And maybe the young people are more likely to understand now. I just don't know. It's possible.

Thanks Mods for re-opening this thread, as there is a 3-part docuseries out this week on Investigation Discovery.

More than two decades after one of the most disturbing crimes in recent American history, the case of Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children in the family's bathtub, is revisited in The Cult Behind the Killer: The Andrea Yates Story. The three-part Investigation Discovery docuseries, available on HBO Max beginning Jan. 6, reexamines the story through court records and medical history, while placing particular emphasis on the belief system the Yates family subscribed to leading up to the tragedy.

The series includes the participation of Rusty Yates, Andrea’s former husband, as well as former followers of preacher Michael Woroniecki. They describe a set of teachings informed by rigid doctrine, fear, and isolation, which they claim might have intensified Andrea’s mental illness long before the crime occurred. Filmmakers attempted to reach Woroniecki, who has said that he is not to blame for Yates’ actions, and his wife Rachel Woroniecki, neither of whom responded to requests for participation.

I have HBO Max because we had an existing Foxtel service. (HBO used to be a Foxtel channel here in Australia. When that changed, Foxtel service holders got a free basic HBO Max account.) I don't know if it will get released the same time here, but if it does I'll probably watch it. I'll let you know what I think. This is a case I know in passing, but I've never watched a documentary or read a book about it, so I won't be able to compare it to other productions.

I'll start watching it tonight. This case horrified me. I felt horrible for Andrea and her poor children. IMO

I'm in the US and all 3 episodes are out on HBO Max, I'm watching right now.

Ok, I watched all 3 parts today and the part that stuck with me the most is simultaneously that I can't believe Rusty actually participated, and that he's STILL, 25 years later, glossing over events and grossly minimizing his part his decisions played in all this.

Completely agree.
