TX TX - Harold 'Buddy' Vest, 25, Gainesville, 27 June 1946

  • #21
I see that there hasn't been much movement on this case in quite some time, but came across this report and thought it should be shared.
Also, thought it would be prudent to add that I am related to the Chief of Police at the time of Mr. Vest's murder, though he was long gone before I was born. If I remember correctly, he was the brother of my great-grandfather. 48 Hours sought out my father when they were putting the episode together, but my father did not know anything. His father and grandfather (who would have been Henry's nephew and brother) passed in '99 and '82. I do not believe that Charles had any children.

Thank you for posting the PDF file of the report. Very interesting, especially the pathologist's findings regarding the bones exhumed from Vest's grave.
I remember reading one theory, most likely made by Vest's son, was his father's death was related to intelligence work he had been involved with during the War. If it was a homicide, it certainly was a sophisticated coverup.
Another note, this is from the Vest report, is there were an "unusually large" number of unsolved homicides/suspicious deaths in Galveston and immediate area in the later 1940s and early 50s. I tend to think if it was murder, Vest was killed for some very specific reason...not by some random act or serial killer, but by someone or persons who knew him and had a specific reason to end his life, quietly.
