"But the Houston Police Department will not close the case because the Harris County Medical Examiner's office found that a catheter recently inserted in Harold Farb's chest had been cut with a sharp instrument prior to his death."

Mystery surrounds Harold Farb's death

Wait.. so his catheter had been sliced? As in during the operation then closed up or like someone cut through his chest?

Well, ok, I'm not too sure about that either but the article clearly states hia catheter had been sliced open with a sharp object prior to death. Which indicates to me, cause of death? I need more sources.

SNIPED:
The official cause of death was underdetermined; however, the autopsy report suggests a recently implanted catheter had been cut, which lead to uncontrollable bleeding.

The family paid for an outside assessment two years ago.

“Based on the aforementioned facts, it is my opinion that, in all medical probability, this is a homicide,” wrote well-known pathologist Vincent Di Maio.

HPD turns back on Farb family – Dolcefino Consulting

SNIPED from PI's press release:

Farb died at home after a dialysis catheter in his neck was severed. Forensic pathologist Vincent Di Maio, hired by the family to review Farb’s autopsy says Farb was the victim of a homicide.

Years after turning over Dr. Di Maio’s findings, the death certificate still hasn’t been changed.

Dr. Di Maio says it would have been impossible for Harold Farb to cut his own catheter, dispose of it in the trash, before walking across the room and then bleeding out in the shower.

Oh ok, so an external line. Well who had access to Mr. Farb? It sounds like he was filthy rich to have in home dialysis so I’m assuming he had at least one dedicated dialysis carer and then whom else cared for him to be near him to cut it, dispose of it etc. Need to know some idea of motive and opportunity. Horrible. He sounds like a gracious wonderful man.

I understand LE needing to keep certain things from the public. It just seems like so many cases in Texas go cold simply because LE refuses to release information. This case seems like it would be a limited scope and easily solved and either ruled a homicide or not. After 12 years I do not understand why keeping the file from the family of an 83 year old man on dialysis is necessary to protect an inactive investigation? But then again, I am not LE. It is just MHO..

JMHO: 83, receiving dialysis. This is permanent & very limiting.

Assisted suicide?

The usual:
who benefits from his death
who is present in the house at/around time of death

JMHO YMMV

Wow yep! I believe you are spot-on. .. a mercy killing. Limited people, limited access, easily solveable. If he could not have cut the tube and walked across the room, then somebody else did.
Perhaps LE is declining to investigate simply because they do not want to tarnish the man's good name and reputation in a very religious state where many believe a person who commits suicide is destined to eternal hellfire. Or in the eyes of people who consider suicide to be cowardly, selfish, or immoral. Also- LIFE INSURANCE companies may refuse to pay claims for suicides.. There is a number of reason's that would compel LE to be sympathetic toward's the man's circumstances and refuse to take action that would cause more harm to the man's good character and injure his estate.

Just came across this article from earlier this year about the 2006 death of famous Houston developer Harold Farb. Also adding an earlier story and the obituary.

This is sad. He really hated dialysis per this article. There was no struggle, and the family has no suspects in mind. Mystery surrounds Harold Farb's death
