Human remains have been found in Hunt County, although they have not yet been identified, according to the Hunt County Sheriff.

At approximately 3:34 p.m. on January 22, the Hunt County Sheriff stated they received a call for possible human remains on Hunt County Road 1060.

Upon further investigation by Hunt County deputies, the remains appeared to be a human skull, according to a press release. Deputies stated they found no other remains in the area.

The remains were transported to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification to determine identity, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office said. Texas rangers will also be assisting in the matter.

Hunt County Road 1060 is an approximately 1200-foot road due north of Farm Road 380 located near the Elm Creek community, according to map data.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the human remains or their identity is asked to contact the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office at 903-453-6838. No further details are available at this time, but updates will be provided as available.

Cadaver dogs from Mark9 Search and Rescue and the EastTex Community Emergency Response Team — volunteer groups that help law enforcement agencies with those efforts in multiple areas, including in Hunt County — were involved in the second search, the sheriff’s office announced Monday.

Mike Ross, the program manager for the community response team, said he was one of seven volunteers from the organization who helped with the search on Sunday.

He said the group covered about a quarter-mile radius of the area where the skull was found, focusing around a creek bed near the road.

“We started near the area where the skull was found and we started making our way out to look for more evidence,” he said, adding that the organization hopes that the discovery can lead to closure for one of the county’s missing persons cases.

Seven people are currently considered missing in Hunt County, according to Texas Advocates for the Missing, an organization that spreads awareness of missing persons cases in the area.

One of the more high-profile cases in the county is related to Michael Chambers, a retired Dallas firefighter from Quinlan who was reported missing in 2017.

The newly found remains, along with the skull found Saturday, will be sent to the Center for Human Identification at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, according to the sheriff’s department.

As Hunt County does not have a medical examiner’s office, Sgt. Shannon Morel, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said the department sends evidence to the center when it needs help to identify human remains.
