So I've been thinking hard on how and why a girl might have run away and not been reported (as far as we know). There were two institutions running in Texas at this time where it's quite possible a girl would want to run/escape, and the adults might not file a report or look for her. The Rebekah home for girls, which has been mentioned here and was part of Carol Ann Cole's/Bossier Doe case, and the Dallas Hare Krishnas. In the 70's and 80's, the krishna children were routinely abused and completely isolated from their parents. If you asked one of them if their parents knew where they were, "who cares" would be a likely response. Anyway, it seems like it might be a worthwhile effort to circulate WCJD's poster among survivors of these institutions. Maybe one of these people would recognize her. Each of them have closed facebook groups with many members. Unfortunately, when it comes to these kinds of things I am a chicken!!!! If anyone is interested in this theory and would be willing to contact the admins of these groups, let me know and I can point you to them.

The inverted nipple seems like such a strange thing to release to the public. The only people who would know would be the girl's parents or anyone else who cared for her as a baby/toddler or her doctor. She seems much to young to have had any intimate partners who would know such a personal detail, and it's possible that her parents could be deceased.

The new recon is so much better than the old one. She looks like a 14-16 year old now. She was a very pretty girl. It's such a shame no one seems to be looking for her.

I am wondering where they got that piece of information from (about the inverted nipple). I hope it wasn't a mix up because there was no mention of the scar on her eyebrow.

That seems plausible actually.

Good question. The abc report says she was on the shoulder of the highway. I took that to mean right at the road, but maybe that's not correct. This stretch of the highway is still undeveloped and surrounded by piney woods.

From what I understand, she was found in a culvert at the side of the road.

I believe I may have found the location where she was found on Google Maps, following the description on her Doe Network page and the detail about the culvert. I can see how someone might pass her body if they were driving on I-45 and not paying attention. It seems she would more likely be spotted from the N Fwy Service Road, which neighbors the highway.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Someone would have to drive pretty slowly to notice a body sticking out a culvert, I would think.

Was she fully concealed in the culvert? Or just upon the roadside?

Also we need to remember that the trucker who found her was sitting higher up then someone in a normal vehicle, so they can farther like I said higher up.

If she was in the culvert then that is how he saw her I would imagine. Maybe whoever killed her was not counting on her being seen. I would think if it was a trucker he/she would have known that, so maybe it was someone ither then a trucker.

In the article there were some new details about Ruthie's case that I'd never before heard. One was the inverted nipple and the other was the white sweater thing she was wearing. I have heard mentioned before that often LE won't immediately release certain information about the UID to not mess with the investigation. I think it's possible that they're releasing new and more specific details because they're getting more desperate to identify Ruthie, so they think the more specific details could jog someone's memory.

That's probably true for the inverted nipple info, but the sweater was yellow, not white as written.

I'm feeling pretty optimistic; the ABC News page that posted the recent news story shows over 9,000 shares of the article. There's no telling how many others have shared the story beyond that. Makes me curious to know how many tips have possibly been called in already. Hoping the 36th anniversary of her death doesn't roll around before she has her name back.

Excellent! Please, please be the article that brings our Ruthie home! I am going to go read the comments, see if anyone suspects she is someone they know.

I had the afternoon off from work and my mind is constantly thinking about this so I took a drive out to the Hitching Post (super seedy place) then to the 1696 stretch and then all the way to Ellis to get an idea of the proximity.

Today I was looking at the stretch before the 1696 exit because that's what I picked up from Doe Network and the abc news article. I didn't see any culverts on this stretch of the highway. I searched websleuths and found the culvert info came from Mia G when she spoke with the detective in 2009...

"OH one more tiny bit of info... IF Lt Perkins was correct in saying the body was found aprox 1 mile from the Hitchin Post, she was found between mile marker 118 and 119.. I have seen someplaces mention Texas FM 1696.. that road is 4 miles form the area I mapped out yesterday.. I started watching my mileage in the Hitchin Post lot, and drove exactly one mile, and then got pictures about a quarter mile from tht point in both direaction. (yes we wondered up and down a very busy interstate, but I made sure we stayed in the grassy area and OFF the hw) Besides te culvert there are also 3 or 4 clumps of trees, not sure how big the trees would haev been in 1980, they are decen ized now. (as u will see in the pics as soon as I cna get my hands on them..lol) Srry to keep rambling, I just am trying to think of the smallest details of my journey yesterday that may help somewhere!" I think this is post #180

I'll have to go back another day to look at that area. Mia G seemed to have some doubt about what Perkins was saying. I can't find any other site that says anything about the body being found in a culvert or 1 mile from the Hitchin Post. Now I wonder if the news mentioning 9:20 came from the detectives or where? If they spoke with an official you would think they would confirm the site. So confusing!!

I have to say this little trip made me feel even more for WCJD. This was not a place for a young girl to be alone at night. At that age I would have been scared out of my mind. I think she must have been desperately running, or rebellious and brave.

True, but if she was in a culvert one mile from the Hitchin Post (truck stop) then a big portion of the traffic would have been truckers as well. That said, it might just be that many were distracted and she was hidden well enough that the guy found her by chance.

Just want to give you a huge thank you, Wonder123, for doing this trip. Poor Ruthie Doe--she must have been terrified! Her last moments, even before the assault, must have been frightening!

If the exact location of her body is verified that could help. I feel it would be hard to see something poking out of a culvert unless someone was actively LOOKING there.

In addition, I've been thinking about the guy who found her. Wasn't his surname the same as Robert Ben Rhoades, or am I mistaken? Either way, I was thinking that perhaps the guy who found her is an accomplice of another serial killer- someone who did their 'dirty work'. I think LE should chase him up. Not trying to incriminate him, but it is a possibility.

  • #1,018
That was pretty much my train of thought, Zelda_s. Nobody is quite sure whether his last name is Rhodes/Rhoades...I agree about the culvert, you would have to look, it seems.

  • #1,019
Rhoades is correct.

That seems like he could have been related to Rhoades, then!

OT about James Rhoades, but I was po'd about a comment I read on an article about our Ruthie Doe which said "Who cares?" God, that annoyed me so much. I bet if she was their relative, they'd never stop looking. I'm trying not to get upset about idiots like that on the Internet, but man, it's hard when they call searching for a murdered little girl's identity a waste of resources.
She deserves her name and justice! I will NEVER give up on her! Even when she gets her name back, I will NEVER stop searching for her killer! It may seem impossible but I will TRY because I CARE!
