AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is looking into the disappearance of a man last seen downtown early Sunday morning.

Jason John, 30, was last seen on Rainey Street heading toward Lady Bird Lake Trail at 2 a.m. Sunday, according to a flyer shared with KXAN by John’s friends. He is 5’10”, 190 pounds and was wearing a black-and-white print jacket, black pants and black Jordans sneakers with white soles.

APD confirmed Tuesday it is investigating John’s disappearance as a missing adult case, and the investigation is ongoing. Details remain limited at this time, officials told KXAN.

Those with any information about John’s disappearance are asked to call (914) 473-7729, (908) 397-2878 or (646) 239-9015.

Oh I sure hope he's not connected to this:

AUSTIN, Texas — A person went missing in Lady Bird Lake early Sunday morning and crews are working to find them.

Around 2:18 a.m., Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the scene on East Avenue near the I-35 bridge. A person reportedly went under the water and a bystander attempted to rescue them. The bystander was treated for hypothermia.

Witnesses provided conflicting information and rescuers were not able to determine where the person was last seen. They believe they found the person's belongings along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail."

Repeat info, but still in the news so that’s good:

Police say Jason John was last seen around 2 a.m. Sunday, February 5 on Rainey Street walking towards the Lady Bird Lake Trail.

They still haven't found him. :(

"I'm learning more about people being drugged on Rainey Street and roofied and judging from the 10 minutes of video I have, that wasn't my brother walking down that road, there was something more that was effecting him," RJ said.

RJ said there’s a missing piece to this puzzle.

"A key point is that there'd no cameras on the entire trail and I've been on that trail multiple times, 7:30, 11:30, 1:00 a.m., it is so dark there it is a very dangerous and shady space,’ RJ said, ‘At the end of the day without that footage that's missing from the entire street, we're not able to close anything off 100 percent."

For nearly the past week, several of John’s loved ones from all over the country have flown in to help in the search.

At the vigil, they not only asked the public to help find him, they’re demanding answers from Austin Police.

“We cannot go the rest of our lives thinking that our son is somewhere out there, you know, that is not gonna happen,” Jason John’s mother said. “We need answers. We need more help.”

Mayor Watson tweeted, "my heart goes out to the family and friends of Mr. John."

Mayor Watson went on to say he has been in touch with Austin Police Department Chief Chacon, who has assured him APD is doing everything they can to find the missing 30-year-old.

APD says they are investigating this as a missing adult case.

AUSTIN, Texas - A family is begging for answers on their missing loved one.

It has been eight days since 30-year-old Jason John was last seen on Feb. 5 after a night out with friends on Rainey Street.

"Our main thing is we want to find my brother in good health would be great, but, if he has passed, we want to find him. We want to have a proper funeral," said Rinju John, brother of Jason.

The John family is beyond frustrated as they move into day eight wondering where 30-year-old Jason John is.

How sad & disturbing. Lots of crime in Austin these days, including violent crime. I hope he was not a victim of a random attack.

It's good to know the mayor is aware & APD is trying, but they are understaffed.

They need to search far downriver & speak to the Lower Colorado River Authority. Alerts at trailheads & parks plus contacting LE in towns on the river's path south (Bastrop, LaGrange, Bay City). Reaching out to hunters & water sports enthusiasts to keep a look out might help as well if, sadly, he ended up in the lake/river.

"We have footage of him until the end of Rainey Street. At that point, once he takes that turn, we don't know what direction he went in," said Rinju.

Rinju says the walk home should have taken 18 minutes. However, there is only 10 minutes of footage of his brother. The remaining eight minutes of his walk home was left undocumented due to the lack of no cameras in that area.

"Did he go in the water? Did he go on the trail? Do you go back on the road? Was he kidnaped? There's no concrete evidence," he said
.

Where is the start of the trail? Because according to this map, the end of Rainey St to the trail is an 18 minute walk. I may need help with this map. :)

Unfortunately, the Feb 5 report of someone going into the river at 2:18 am is probably him.

The map in this story shows where the person went into the Colorado River aka Lady Bird Lake (red marker at East Ave & I-35). Walking south on Rainey St. & turning left would take someone onto the Hike & Bike Trail beside the lake.

This one is local to me. Had a feeling this morning when I saw APD had retrieved a body that it would be John. I’m glad his family at least now knows….but what happened? Did he go off the bridge on purpose? I don’t recall anyone mentioning him being upset. Terrible mistake?

Why do we find so many young men in the water.

Upthread there is an article where his brother speculates maybe he was roofied or something similar because the video of Jason on Rainey St. made his brother suspicious.

Also upthread, is the original report of Jason going in the water a bystander who risked hypothermia to try to rescue him.

I don't know why his body was just found but maybe it only recently surfaced? It's really a river not a lake so at least he hadn't floated downstream into an area that made recovery unlikely.

Hopefully an autopsy can give an idea if foul play was involved.

I remember reading the report on Twitter from APD (I believe, unless it was an EMS report) of a person in the water and a civilian who tried to rescue them and was hypothermic. I read some articles that quoted John’s brother about didn’t recall the roofie mention, thank you. I hope the toxicology reveals more.

I've been wondering if these murders have anything to do with the body's of those men that were found in the Houston water ways last year....seems eerily similar....last seen leaving the bar, ending up in a body of water, all were young men.....idk seems suspect

Bell County Sheriff’s Department deputies located the missing woman’s body in a bar-ditch near the 1300 block of Berger Road, just north of Temple after it was spotted by a passerby who alerted authorities.
Thanks for this update, but this is very, very sad and terrible news. My heart aches for her family and daughter.

FOX 7 Austin caught up with Chief Chacon to ask about the serial killer rumors. He said those rumors are just rumors.

"I realize that there is a rampant rumor about a potential serial killer here in Austin," said Chief Chacon. "We've found no evidence of that."

Chief Chacon added the deaths in Lady Bird Lake are nothing out of the ordinary. He says those deaths are tragic, but it happens every year in the city.

"It's a horrible circumstance that we have these, and we look at each one to determine the circumstances in which they occurred," he said. "Some of them are accidental, unfortunately, some of them are also suicides."

If anything changes, Chief Chacon says APD will let the public know.

"Believe me, we would be passing that information along to the public very promptly," he said.
