The Doe Network: Case File 696UMTX

Case of an unidentified, transient male who was struck by a vehicle and killed on I-35 near Lake Dallas, Denton County, Texas on June 15, 1983. I've been referring to him as the "Bearded Backpacker".

White male
25-35 years
5'11" & 210lbs (est. per Doe Network / NamUs has 5'10" & Cannot Estimate Weight)
Dark brown hair worn long
Full beard and moustache
Brown eyes
Tattoo: Red and blue tattoo above left nipple. Hand giving the bird (middle finger extended). Hand is walking on legs. Above drawing is "DRUGS SEX" and below is "ROCK-N-ROLL"
Personal Effects:
- Worn religious medal found in wallet (no further description)
- A white metal necklace with two medallions: one has a picture of a small girl, one has an inlaid design of polished wood chips or stone
- Metal social security card with the name "Dewayne V. Honey" and a SS# that belonged to a woman in South Carolina (issued in 1970)
No DNA or Dental Records - Only Fingerprints

I have poured over Ancestry, FamilySearch, and other random genealogy sites trying to see if maybe I could track him down, as no one under that name was reported missing. The actual Dwayne Honey was a police officer, and later chief of police, in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania (he passed in 1997). I went through Mr. Honey's family tree like my life depended on it, and have yet to find a male that was born around the time as John Doe that doesn't have activity past 1983. It seems that he is not a relative, distant or otherwise, of the real Dwayne Honey.

That being said, I've also considered the fact that he may have come in contact with Dwayne Honey if he was passing through or staying in the Pen Argyl area at some point, maybe cited for something like loitering, panhandling, petty theft, etc. as many transients have before. I've emailed the Pen Argyl PD about possibly finding old police reports or records involving a person who fits his description or the timeline.

I've gone through yearbook photos on Ancestry, looking at people who's names sound similar or could be a short leap from Dewayne V Honey (Duane Haney, Dwayne Honea, etc.) and only found 2 students who have facial similarities, similar names, and were born in the right timeframe. Working on figuring out where they went after high school and, most importantly, after 1983. I've also searched NamUs for anyone who fits his description and timeline, but nothing solid has come of it yet. All this to say, I still have not even the slightest clue as to who the Bearded Backpacker is, but it's been an interesting puzzle to focus on while I wait impatiently for some progress in my Princess Blue inquiries.

*Edited to add sketch/tracing of the tattoo"

This is possibility #1 - A two-time Vietnam veteran who disappeared after going on a fishing trip with 3 friends. The boat was found half-sunk shortly after, and 2 of the friends' bodies were located. Daniel and the other woman are basically presumed dead. My mind started chasing zebras such as "What if he hit his head in the boat accident and forgot who he was, so he wandered around the country until he died?!" 7 years is quite a long time to be backpacking/hitchhiking. But it's worth a look, I think.

Possibility #2 - Joseph Edward Doerfler (MP38173) was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, and failed to report to work on March 16, 1981. His motorcycle was found on the side of the road in New Mexico shortly after his disappearance. My thinking is that maybe he just decided that he was done with the military and took off. Went as far as New Mexico and had bike trouble or ran out of gas, then hitchhiked from there. Who knows...

Possibility #3 - R0bert Ronald Tippit (MP#19948) was last seen in Topeka, Kansas in 1977 or 1978, but the Department of Justice says that his DOLC was in 1980. He may have gone to California. I think that he looks the most like Bearded Backpacker out of the 3 MP's so far.

Possibility #4 - Timothy Wayne Coulson (MP55949) was last seen in June 1982, though the last known location isn't straightforward (Toronto, Ontario & Wells, British Columbia & Kirkland, Washington are all listed on NamUs). He was said to be returning to Wells, BC to gather up is things and get his life together. He hasn't been seen or heard from since. He had a history of being transient and had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, spending time in several hospitals and attempting suicide twice.

This seems to me to be very worthy of further comparison. Those eyes and eyebrows have me convinced. Did you submit this potential match?

@Melt71 I still can’t get into my NamUs! Now I feel the frustration of not being able to see the list of exclusions! Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have more patience to try and get it fixed lol

I did contact the Sheriff’s Department that has Timothy Coulson’s MP case, and sent over an email containing info I’d found and info about this UID. That was probably 6 months ago and I’ve yet to hear anything from them. I contacted the ME office that has the UID case, as well, and they were interested to see where it goes.

@MadMcGoo (you’ve had a busy day!) or anyone else able to post rule out list? @EmilyHTX looks like a potential, just from a quick look on my phone.

There are no exclusions listed.

Thanks, Emily!

Thank you!

It’s good to know someone associated with the case is receptive to tips/leads! That’s always an incentive for those of us who work so hard to provide the tips and leads! IMO, anyway.

No r/o listed. Timothy Coulson (suggested above) Namus MP file doesn't indicate he's been ruled out against this set of remains.
