The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
The Doe Network: Case File 696UMTX
Case of an unidentified, transient male who was struck by a vehicle and killed on I-35 near Lake Dallas, Denton County, Texas on June 15, 1983. I've been referring to him as the "Bearded Backpacker".
White male
25-35 years
5'11" & 210lbs (est. per Doe Network / NamUs has 5'10" & Cannot Estimate Weight)
Dark brown hair worn long
Full beard and moustache
Brown eyes
Tattoo: Red and blue tattoo above left nipple. Hand giving the bird (middle finger extended). Hand is walking on legs. Above drawing is "DRUGS SEX" and below is "ROCK-N-ROLL"
Personal Effects:
- Worn religious medal found in wallet (no further description)
- A white metal necklace with two medallions: one has a picture of a small girl, one has an inlaid design of polished wood chips or stone
- Metal social security card with the name "Dewayne V. Honey" and a SS# that belonged to a woman in South Carolina (issued in 1970)
No DNA or Dental Records - Only Fingerprints
I have poured over Ancestry, FamilySearch, and other random genealogy sites trying to see if maybe I could track him down, as no one under that name was reported missing. The actual Dwayne Honey was a police officer, and later chief of police, in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania (he passed in 1997). I went through Mr. Honey's family tree like my life depended on it, and have yet to find a male that was born around the time as John Doe that doesn't have activity past 1983. It seems that he is not a relative, distant or otherwise, of the real Dwayne Honey.
That being said, I've also considered the fact that he may have come in contact with Dwayne Honey if he was passing through or staying in the Pen Argyl area at some point, maybe cited for something like loitering, panhandling, petty theft, etc. as many transients have before. I've emailed the Pen Argyl PD about possibly finding old police reports or records involving a person who fits his description or the timeline.
I've gone through yearbook photos on Ancestry, looking at people who's names sound similar or could be a short leap from Dewayne V Honey (Duane Haney, Dwayne Honea, etc.) and only found 2 students who have facial similarities, similar names, and were born in the right timeframe. Working on figuring out where they went after high school and, most importantly, after 1983. I've also searched NamUs for anyone who fits his description and timeline, but nothing solid has come of it yet. All this to say, I still have not even the slightest clue as to who the Bearded Backpacker is, but it's been an interesting puzzle to focus on while I wait impatiently for some progress in my Princess Blue inquiries.
*Edited to add sketch/tracing of the tattoo"
