In 1975, a family was having a picnic at a roadside park along Highway 77, just south of Giddings. The family found a trash bag with human remains inside.

In October 2024, the remains were sent to a University of North Texas lab for DNA analysis with the goal of identifying the victim.

LEE COUNTY, Texas — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek answers in a 1975 cold case involving the remains of a young boy found near Giddings.

The sheriff’s office recently reopened the investigation to reexamine evidence using modern forensic technology. Investigators have partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which helped create a new facial reconstruction meant to show what the child may have looked like in life.

Description
On September 07, 1975, the skeletal remains of a 3 to 5 year old boy were discovered alongside US-77 at a roadside park. The location (now a trailer park) was 5.4 miles south of Giddings, Texas, and 0.8 miles north of the county line. The child was first wrapped in a flat bed sheet, Canon brand, with a multicolored floral pattern. Then, he was enclosed in two dark green trash bags secured with bailing wire. He had straight dark brown hair about 4 inches long. The child was wearing a shirt and pants like the attached image which were both Buster Brown brand. Authorities estimate the child died about 2 months prior to discovery. Examination of the child’s body indicated a previous history of physical trauma. The image of the boy is a facial approximation produced by a NCMEC forensic artist and may depict what he looked like in life.

  • Age: 14 years old

Details of Disappearance
Phillip was last seen after school in Fremont, California on March 29, 1974. He lived with his mother and stepfather in the 40600 block of Valero Drive.

On the day of his disappearance, he borrowed two dollars from a friend at Mission San Jose High School so he could ride the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train to the end of the line. The nearest BART station was over four miles from the high school, but Phillip didn't take his ten-speed bicycle; he left it chained to a pole at the school. He has never been heard from again.

Phillip told two classmates that he planned to run away, but he does not fit the profile of a typical runaway teen. He wasn't having any major problems in his life that would have led him to leave home and never contact his loved ones again. He didn't take any clothes, and the only money he had was the borrowed two dollars.

Some friends of Phillip's older brother reported seeing him in the Warm Springs, California area a few months after his disappearance. They didn't realize he was a missing person at the time and didn't report the sighting until they saw his picture published in the newspapers.

Phillip's father was stationed on a military base in Germany when his son disappeared. Phillip and his brother were scheduled to visit him in June 1974. Authorities stated they had no evidence of foul play in his disappearance, but it remains unsolved.

Man, that poor little lad should be in his mid-50s now. So much life taken from him 💔

I suspect this little boy was never reported missing. Strikes me as a case of long-term child abuse.

Sadly you may well be right. I wonder if he was ever in school or preschool at any point, or anywhere where he'd be in regular contact with someone outside his household? The idea that a child that young could disappear and not be missed by anyone is too heartbreaking to think about
