SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A one-day-old baby boy was found abandoned outside a Texas church for nearly 20 hours during the recent intense heat wave that saw temperatures soar far beyond triple digits.

San Antonio police say a man and a woman were seen on camera about 1 a.m. on July 17 carrying a basket into the parking lot of Grissom Road Church, according to a Crime Stoppers report on Wednesday.

The two then placed the basket by the back door of the church and left on foot. It wasn't until about 8:50 p.m. when a bicyclist noticed something "suspicious" under the awning, police told FOX Weather.

When he looked near the basket, he told police he noticed a baby’s leg sticking out with a black jacket over the basket. As he moved the jacket, that's when he saw the baby inside.

The high temperature for the day was 110 degrees, police said. Yet despite the life-threatening temperatures, the newborn was not in distress and still had the umbilical cord attached to him, police said.

A note was found left at the scene along with the baby, investigators said. Texas Child Protective Services was later notified.

Back in June, Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 780 that expands the state's "Baby Moses" law to provide greater accessibility to families in crisis by allowing the use of "baby boxes" to surrender a newborn to an emergency infant care provider.

The inclusion of the devices as an option to surrender a child will take effect Sept. 1.

A police report says the basket was covered by a jacket.
When they uncovered the basket, they found the baby inside.
KSAT 12 reports temps hit a near record of 104 degrees that day.
SAPD reports the baby was not in a state of distress, but still had the umbilical cord attached.

A note accompanying the baby was also found.

Texas has a Safe Haven Law: Called the Baby Moses Law, babies younger than 60 days can be safely surrendered at any hospital, fire station, and emergency medical services facility in the state

San Antonio — SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Police Department is still looking for help to find out who left behind a newborn baby with the umbilical cord still attached to him at the Grissom Road Church of Christ on July 17.

************
Tonight Fox San Antonio sources have told us that whoever left the baby left a note inside with two things written on it.

One was the baby's date of birth and his name....Anikan.

Everyone we spoke to in the Timber Hill Creek neighborhood where Anikan was found agrees on one thing, God was watching over him.

Crime Stoppers are now offering a $5,000 reward.

The infant had been in the basket for almost 20 hours before he was found. The basket was placed under the awning of the back doors. The temperature high for the day was 110° F.

The Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) told KENS 5 the baby is still alive, and DFPS currently has legal custody. The boy has been placed in a foster home.

“What a miracle,” said Pamela Allen, the founder and CEO of Eagle Flight Advocacy. “What I believe is truly remarkable is that the baby’s umbilical cord; which has all the nutrients that the baby needs to survive, was still attached. In my opinion, that’s what kept this baby alive.”

Is that not 3 different people in those photos? The people in black are wearing different clothes?

Never mind I get it now. He took off his jacket. I should have read before I commented.

For me these people look like two dudes. Very young, teens or young adults, nevertheless both look male to me. What makes the LE think one of them is female?

Scary because it really seems like they wanted to give that baby a fresh start. Picked The Wrong Door. Horrors to think what could have happened over those 20 hours in the heat...

So many cases on these threads of adults failing littles. This feels different...

Unfortunately this new law is not yet in effect as per the above mentioned press release: The inclusion of Newborn Safety Devices as an option to surrender a child will take effect September 1, 2023.

What I don’t understand is why the police is going after them. They did much better than many other cases that we read about which is to murder the infant and discard it. This infant will be adopted and loved with a life that his parents realized they could not give them. Now they are being hunted like criminals with their pictures in their local papers for everyone to see.

Health care for the mother, perhaps? She needs physical & emotional support.

I suppose the heat was not much different than his warm home prior to birth?
