This is very sad info, coming from the victim's family. My heart goes out to them...

Family of woman found dead in east Austin helping police catch killer

Police haven't given her many details about the case. Detectives told Wheeler her granddaughter was discovered naked on the side of US Highway 183 on New Year's Eve with obvious injuries. The Travis County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide. Police are not releasing how she died as they investigate. Homicide investigators were at the scene Monday and interviewed witnesses.

"I don't know how the person who murdered her found her, whether it was someone she met or someone who targeted her,” Wheeler said.

She says Nicole had a history of mental illness, battling bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

She was visiting Austin, living in a home for women, after being released from a nearby mental hospital.

"She was free to come and go, so she could have easily met someone within those two weeks,” Wheeler said.

At this time, while coping with the sudden loss, the family is asking for help identifying the person behind the crime.

Police investigating possible connection between E. Austin murder and nearby sex assault

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is investigating a possible connection between the death of a 23-year-old woman in East Austin and a sexual assault of a different woman in a nearby park.
[.....]
Police say the proximity of the two incidents is the primary reason to look at the connection, though they are also investigating DNA evidence.

58-year-old David Green and 18-year-old Kyle Matthew Kenoski, both homeless, are charged with aggravated sexual assault after a woman says the pair raped her when she walked to the park after having a fight with her boyfriend.

Here is a Google map of both locations.

APD releases last known video of woman found dead on New Year's Eve

Austin police released new video of the last known sighting of a 23-year-old woman who was found dead on Dec. 31 in a wooded area in east Austin.

The surveillance video from Dec. 28 shows Coleman walking past a gas station just after 5:30 p.m. and about a half hour later walking back towards the gas station and going inside.

She looks like she’s casing the parking lot, like she needs money or needs help.
Strange her shoes look like they were way too big for her too?

she did go in the store but no info on what, if anything, she bought

The answers might be found at the Group Home.

“Nicole was staying at a group home for women in Austin and stopped answering her text messages after Christmas.”

Where was her Meds? (if any?)

“She had been receiving treatment from several mental health facilities here in town and she recently moved to this neighborhood," O'Farrell said.

It’s also strange about the Way Too BIG Looking Shoes she’s wearing in the Video.

I know police havent released official cause of death, wonder if the parents know or have seen the autopsy? That would help narrow down similar crimes. Police stated death and assault both very violent, either NOT a first time offense or was first and continued after. How is there no DNA found at the scene?
