The TTPD have now said that he was handcuffed and then they took them off once they got to the campus station. I certainly hope he was patted down because there had been a call beforehand asking the officers to check on him because of a gunshot in the dorms. The police still haven’t stated how he got the weapon, wether it was one sitting at the station or he still had it on his person. Either way they now have the fbi reviewing their policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all the students.

On October 9th, 2017, Texas Tech Police Officers East and Snelson were called to Daniels suite at 1803 Boston Avenue, Talkington Dormitory #134C in reference to a welfare check due to complaints from Daniels' suitemates that they had heard a gunshot from Daniels' suite around 3 AM on the 9th. Officers located Daniels and patted him down for officer safety upon contact with him and did not locate a weapon at that time. Daniels gave Officers East and Snelson consent to search his suite. Officers Snelson and East located suspected Xanax pills and a small quantity of marijuana along with drug paraphernalia on Daniels' person and in his suite and placed him under arrest. Daniels was transported to the Texas Tech Police Department for completion of arrest paperwork. During this time, while Daniels and Officer East were in a room alone, Daniels removed the Springfield XD 45 caliber pistol from his pants and executed Officer East by shooting him in the head.

Frankly from the statements about the gun theft I don't understand why they didn't get a warrant and search the vehicle for that gun.
xxxxx went to his bedroom about 12:30AM and immediately noticed his gun was missing. xxxxx spoke to a friend, xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxxxxx advised that he had caught Daniels going into xxxxx's room earlier that evening. xxxxxxxxxxx asked Daniels what he was doing in there and Daniels replied that he was just looking around, looking for the bathroom. xxxxx advised Daniels has been to the residence on other occasions and would know where the bathroom is located. xxxxx advised that he went outside and Daniels was gone as was his BMW.

xxxxx called Daniels on the phone to ask if Daniels had his (xxxxx) gun. Daniels denied having it and returned to the residence to talk to xxxxx about it. Daniels continued to deny having the gun and became angry when confronted about it. Daniels told xxxxx "if I had your gun I would use it to kill you and then shoot myself." Daniels at one point during the argument, Daniels reached into his waistband in a threatening manner and xxxxx believed that he had the firearm there. Daniels commented to that he doesn't fight fair, he fights dirty". Daniels eventually left and xxxxx called the Lubbock Police to report the theft.

Hollis Daniels, a former Texas Tech freshman from Seguin, is set to stand trial on Monday for capital murder - five years and a day after he was arrested in connection with the shooting death of campus police officer Floyd East Jr..

However, jury selection will not begin until a few weeks later. Judge John McClendon in the 137th District Court is expected to call the case and ask attorneys for the state and defense if they are ready to begin trial and then deal with pretrial matters.

The sentencing phase, in the capital murder trial for a Seguin native, is now underway in Lubbock.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that Hollis “Reid” Daniels entered a guilty plea on Monday as his trial was set to begin in a Lubbock courtroom. The plea immediately pushed the trial into the sentencing phase, with testimony starting on Tuesday.

Daniels, who’s now 24-years old, has admitted that he shot and killed a campus police officer in the briefing room at the Texas Tech Police Department. Officer Floyd East was killed in October of 2017. East had earlier arrested Daniels on a drug charge.

Daniels now faces either the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Testimony in the sentencing phase is expected to resume on Wednesday.
