A convicted child rapist and former Lufkin police officer was handed a 12 1/2-year sentence in federal court Wednesday for using a 10-year-old girl to produce child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Ronnie Gurganus Jr., 38, pleaded guilty to the crimes June 1. Evidence presented in court showed Gurganus enticed the girl to engage in sexual activity in order to record and photograph the acts.
Gurganus resigned from the police force in March 1990 amid suspicions of drug use. He was sentenced in state district court in 2004 to two concurrent 35-year prison terms for raping the 10-year-old. Police searching Gurganus' computer after his arrest found Internet pictures of other children engaging in sexual activities.
Gurganus has been remorseful for his actions, according to his attorney, Roger Moss, of Lufkin. Gurganus pleaded to the state charges, not dreaming he would also face federal charges, Moss said.
