On October 26, 1983, 14-year old Sondra Ramber was last seen at her Santa Fe, Texas home. Eventually Sondra was determined to be missing after it was discovered that the door to the house was open, biscuits were baking in the oven and her purse and coat were left behind. Her father reported her missing the following morning. Investigators tended to believe that she ran away, although leaving her purse and coat behind would make this rather unlikely.

There is a fascinating, if inconclusive, link to another case. There is considerable material online about the murder of 14 year old Claudette Covey in 1961 and the possible perpetrator, a son of the local sheriff - Charlie Hitzfelder, who was then 18. The link is that Alton Ramber, at the time of Sondra's disappearance, was dating Deborah Hitzfelder, the ex wife of Hitzfelder who had divorced him a few months previously. You would have thought this would have made him worth a look. However, whether his background was known to the local investigators is an interesting question as it is said that his involvement in the Covey case (and possibly others) was only exposed after the death of his father (the sheriff) in 1993 and his own death in 1998. The evidence that he was an offender seems conclusive (from relatives testimony following his death), although specifics about individual cases are another thing.

It may be that this link is pure coincidence, but any coincidence merits closer examination.

The door to the home was open and biscuits were baking in the oven at the time Sondra vanished. Her coat and purse were also located inside the residence. She was initially believed to have gone to the store for a moment, but she never returned to the house.

Some reports may state that Sondra disappeared while en route to school during the morning hours.

Sondra's father reported her as a missing person during the following morning. Authorities initially classified her as a runaway, but the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are unclear. Several investigators believe Sondra may have started a new life for herself with an assumed identity, but there is little evidence available in her case.

Sondra's case may be related to a string of disappearances and/or murders of young women from the Galveston County, Texas area since the 1970's. Michelle Thomas vanished in 1985 and Suzanne Rene Richerson disappeared in 1988. Law enforcement has not determined if these four cases are connected.
