TX - Toddler Trapped in Room During Dog Fight

  • #21
That is awful! They need to immediately put a dog down that viciously attacks anyone. I hope that your family member and the little one are ok now. What kind of dog was it?

Thanks, bamabeauty. Yes, my family member is fine. It was his thigh and butt. It took a long time for it to heal though after all the medical procedures.

Unfortunately the little kid is not alright. His face was mauled. He lost alot of blood as did my family memeber, but at least an adult can somewhat fight back. A little anyway.

Pitbull.

I have no problem with the situation being investigated by both CPS and police. May turn out charges get dropped, but I think any time a child is at risk investigation makes certain the child is safe.

As to viscous dogs, caged or not, you can NEVER be in 100% control. I know really responsible people who learned that lesson with small non viscous but just nippy dogs. And the size of those breeds, an 11 & 13 year old would not have been able to control them.

And I just don't like people having dogs who need to be separated in order to be safe from each other even without children. It can't be a happy life for animals to live constantly wanting to attack a house mate or fear being attacked. It's always been a factor in my own adopting new pets - you fit in smoothly or I'll find another good home for the new comer.

It sounds like the parents may have kept the dogs for dog fighting. If they were keeping them for "protection" they would have trained them differently and they wouldn't necessarily have been caged. They also would have gotten along with each other. It doesn't make sense why they would keep 2 vicious dogs that didn't get along, the most while having a baby in the house as well. The cages should have been more secured, how did both the dogs break out of the cages?

If CPS took the baby due to the boys ages I have no problem with that.
It is entirely irresponsible to leave a 13 and 11 year old with a young baby.

An adult babysitting like an aunt possibly would not have prevented this.... But an adult can usually handle a situation better then a 13 and 11 yo.
Or maybe an adult would have noticed that the cage was not fully shut or whatever...

These parents left their baby in a dangerous situation without adult supervision. Yes, CPS should have gotten involved.
Dogs or no dogs you do not leave a baby with children of such young ages.

I can see the baby being taken away until they could assess the situation, but why arrest the parents? I feel like there is something missing that we aren't privvy to. I think there may have been evidence of previous wounds on the dogs, as suggested they may have been used for dog fighting. Are those dogs typically used for fighting?

I would not have left any of my babies with babysitters this young (or males at all!) but how long did the parents expect to be gone? Only during nap time? Had they arranged for the neighbor to be available in case of emergency? They may have thought they had all the bases covered and felt like this was a good arrangement.

I was babysitting full time in the summer at 12 years old but I came from large family and I was the oldest daughter so I had a lot of experience taking care of younger children. I also knew my mother was 2 houses over if I needed help in any way.
