no email response yet from TX DPS CLE :(

Where is Mitchell Romero? Ya'd think they could verify if they crossed the border...and right now there's lots of LE @ El Paso/Juarez & Laredo/Nuevo Laredo border because of the drug wars...maybe he crossed @ Del Rio/Cuidad Acuna -- but I would think there's be cameras there....IIRC no one checks ID (if you're on foot anyway) going into Mexico, just when you're coming back to TX/US.

don't know what prompted me to do it, but I was checking on the Mitchell thread @ IS.

A poster there said she wrote to her aunt who's an employee of Yokum Co. Sheriff's dept....aunt wrote her back re: what she knew of Mitchell's abduction.

After reading her letter sounds like too little was done too late...and Mitchell is in Mexico.

How sad - his mother murdered & he's taken away from the rest of his family.

:(

Thanks for keeping us updated on Mitchell's case, Texas. Hopefully Mitchell can still be found and brought home. Unfortunately, not a ton of kids are brought back from Mexico, but it does happen. (Oscar, Karla, and Fernando Casanova were taken to Mexico by their father after he murdered their mother. They were found about a year later.) Prayers for a good outcome for Mitchell.

He'll be with his mama now. I'm so sorry for this little one, what a scary life he was dealt. May the angels be with him.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A very sad ending to the story of a little boy who went missing from Denver City in mid October, authorities believe Mitchell Romero has died in a traffic accident in Mexico. The three-year-old disappeared after his mother Veronica was found murdered. Denver City Police believe the boy's father killed her and then took the boy.

.....

A Spanish language newspaper reports Romero was riding with family when the driver of the vehicle lost control. Local authorities say speed was a factor and no one was wearing a seat belt. The report says the three-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bless his little heart. I hope he's wrapped in the arms of angels -- where ever little Mitchell is tonite.

:(

ETA: I guess they have confirmed he's really gone. (I kept reading stories that his death wasn't confirmed.)

Funeral services for Mitchell Romero are pending with Ratliff Funeral Home in Denver City.

I saw this yesterday and had to log in at work to comment. My computer has been at Geek Squad so I've been away, but I couldn't resist this one.

Poor Mitchell. :( I read in one article that they were trying to bring him back to Texas at the time. Whether or not that is true, this is so sad. Rest in peace, Mitchell. I hope they can find the "dad" and prosecute him. He is also responsible for Mitchell's death.

This is the second case I've read about where the child was taken to Mexico and died..

So I'm going to throw this thought out there..............how do we REALLY know he is dead. Could Mexican officials be bribed?

Just a thought.

mysterygirl, IIRC, TX DPS was supposed to be verifying the report....Mitchell is supposed to be buried in TX - I would think the family could ID him.

From what I've read yesterday & today, funeral svcs are still pending...don't know if that means they are still waiting on his body.

I'll write some news stations here in TX to see if they will get an update.

Ok...........having the body would be one thing.

I was just thinking of the cases where you don't have the body!

Maybe I'm paranoid about Mexican officials....

My thoughts exactly as I read the article...how convenient that this baby just happened to die in a car accident and Daddy is nowhere to be found...right? But wait...wasn't Auntie and Uncle returning him to Daddy? I'm not buying it until Texas confirms it.

From March 2014:

http://www.newswest9.com/story/25072555/denver-city-man-arrested-accused-of-murdering-wife-in-2009

On Thursday, March 20, with the help of the Mexican Federal Police, Mario Romero was arrested in Chihuahua, Mexico. He is accused of killing his wife Veronica Esquivel Romero...

The Chihuahua newspaper "El Heraldo" wrote an article about Mario's arrest. The article says that just days before Veronica's murder, she had complained to police about injuries made by her husband. It also says the last time Mitchell saw his mother was when she was lying lifeless under the blankets. The medical examiner determined Veronica was strangled to death...

Denver City Police are currently seeking Mario Romero's extradition back to the United States.

Mario Romero sentenced to 30 years for killing his wife, fleeing to Mexico in 2009

http://www.newswest9.com/story/33490835/mario-romero-sentenced-to-30-years-for-killing-his-wife-fleeing-to-mexico-in-2009

A man who killed his wife and fled to Mexico back in October 2009 pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday.

Mario Romero was extradited from Mexico back in 2015 after the family raised reward money to aid in his capture. He will serve his sentence in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility and be eligible for parole in 15 years.

The family later learned that Mitchell died in a traffic accident in Ojinaga, Mexico back in November 2009. Reports stated that Mitchell was traveling with other family members, not his father. Their itinerary was not clear; however, there was some indication that those family members may have been bringing Mitchell back to the United States.

Family of Denver City murder victim to convicted killer: 'Burn in hell'

http://lubbockonline.com/filed-online/2016-10-26/family-denver-city-murder-victim-convicted-killer-burn-hell

Veronica Esquivel’s family made no secret Wednesday afternoon of their feelings toward her killer.

After Didway pronounced his conviction and sentence, Esquivel Romero’s siblings took the witness stand to describe the harm he’d caused.

“I’m talking to you, Mario. I hope you rot in prison and burn in hell. What you have done has no forgiveness,” Salvador Esquivel said as he looked directly at his former brother-in-law, who lowered his head.

Her family was infuriated when Romero fled, but didn’t give up on finding him. Eventually, they helped law enforcement locate him in Chihuahua, Mexico. By that time, Romero had remarried, had a daughter and owned a small store, according to Esquivel’s victim-impact statement.

“I bet you salivated at the mouth when you got close to Presidio,” Esquivel said. “You smelled freedom, but you were wrong.”

The witness told the defendant he plans to stay in close contact with his parole board. Addressing him directly, he said, “You are a sorry excuse of a man, Mario. Look at me, Mario. Everyone in this room agrees that you are a coward.”

“She was a very happy person,” Martha Núñez told A-J Media.

Earlier, Núñez brought a photo of her late sister and nephew with her to the witness stand.

“I hope you see this face in every waking moment,” she told Romero. “... I hope you suffer the way we are suffering. You can’t even look at me, can you? Your family —”

Núñez looked toward Romero’s family members, seated in the opposite side of the gallery from her’s. Didway interjected that negative comments toward them were inappropriate; Romero kept his head lowered.
