'LONDON — LONDON -- A cargo ship hit a tanker carrying jet fuel for the American military off the coast of eastern England Monday, setting both vessels on fire and sending fuel pouring into the North Sea.

The collision triggered a major rescue operation by lifeboats, coast guard aircraft and commercial vessels. All 37 crew members aboard the two vessels were safe and accounted for, with one hospitalized, local lawmaker Graham Stuart said.

Stuart said he was concerned “about the potential ecological impact” of the spill.'

''All but one of the 37 crew of the two ships were brought safely ashore. One crew member from the cargo ship Solong was missing, the vessel's owner, Ernst Russ, said in a statement.

The ship's owner said "13 of the 14 Solong crew members have been brought safely [to] shore." The owner of the fuel tanker said all 23 of its crew members were safe.''

''U.S.-based Crowley Ship Management, which operates the Stena Immaculate, said the tanker "sustained a ruptured cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel" when struck by the container ship, triggering a fire and "multiple explosions onboard," with fuel released into the sea.''

My heart sank on hearing this news. I live about 70 miles inland from this coast.

This part of the English coastline is a very important breeding site for our sea birds. The fuel spill could have disastrous consequences on them & other marine life.

( I vividly remember an oil spill which happened when I was a child. It was heartbreaking as the birds become coated with oily residue & unable to fly or feed. Large numbers die.

Surviving birds have to be picked up individually off the beach & meticulously hand-washed several times to get the oil off their plumage, nursed back to health & presumably released on unaffected coastline )

It will require a massive operation to try & contain/remove the pollutants.

Hopefully a jet fuel spillage will be less problematic than an oil spillage.

My sympathies also for the injured crew members & the one missing, following this disaster.

''As we just reported, a 59-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the collision between two ships in the North Sea yesterday.

The Humberside Police say that a criminal investigation into the cause of the collision is now under way, and they are working in collaboration with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

“Extensive work has already been carried out, and we are working closely with our partners to understand what happened, and to provide support to all of those affected," Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Nicholson says in the statement.

The 59-year-old man was arrested “following enquiries undertaken by my team" Nicholson says.

He is not identified, but the statement says he has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision.''

''Tracking site Marine Traffic appears to show that one ship was moving and the other was stationary when they collided.

The Stena Immaculate was drifting at a speed of 0.1 knots while the Solong approached at a speed of 16 knots.

Crowley, the company that manages the Stena Immaculate, said it was struck by the Solong while it was anchored.''

''British police have since opened a criminal investigation into the crash and arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

A spokesperson for Ernst Russ, which owns the Solong, confirmed to CNN that the arrested man is the ship’s captain and that he is a Russian national.
The rest of the crew are a mix of Russians and Filipinos, the spokesperson added.''

''Martyn Boyers, chief executive of the nearby Port of Grimsby East, had expressed disbelief that such a crash could have happened, given the sophistication of modern shipping technology.

“It seems a mystery, really, because all the vessels now have very highly sophisticated technical equipment to plot courses and to look at any obstacles or anything they’ve got to avoid,” Boyers told CNN on Monday.

“How did that vessel (the Solong) continue plowing into the berth vessel? There must have been some warning signs. They must have been able to detect it on the radar,” he said.''

The captain of the Solong cargo ship arrested after a collision with a tanker in the North Sea is a Russian national, the ship's owner has confirmed. Humberside Police said the 59-year-old man remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The Portuguese-flagged Solong and the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate crashed off the East Yorkshire coast. A missing crew member from the cargo ship is presumed dead after a search and rescue operation was called off.
