#LatestNews - Officers continue to search for a man who has gone overboard from a boat in Poole Harbour.

At 1.59am on Monday 2 May 2022 Dorset Police received a report that 24-year-old David Haw had fallen off a RIB.

Throughout the day officers have been assisting HM Coastguard with searches.

David is described as white, five feet ten inches tall, of slim build, with short mousey brown hair that is shaved at the sides and back, but longer on top. He also has a short beard and bushy eyebrows.

Chief Inspector Darren Harris, of Dorset Police, said: “A coordinated multi-agency search and rescue effort has been going on since the initial report of David’s disappearance.

“Police, the coastguard, the RNLI and volunteers from DorSAR have been searching extensively in the harbour and surrounding areas. We will continue with our efforts to find David.

“If anyone has seen David, or a man matching his description, since he has gone missing or has any information that might assist our search, please contact us urgently.”

A search is under way for a man who fell off a boat in Dorset in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Maritime Coastguard Agency said it received a call at 2.15am about an unidentified person in the water at Poole Harbour.

Dorset Police later named the man as 24-year-old David Haw and urged the public to get in touch if they had any information.

Officers are continuing in their efforts to locate a man who has gone overboard from a boat in Poole Harbour.

At 1.59am on Monday 2 May 2022 Dorset Police received a report that 24-year-old David Haw from Sussex had fallen off a RIB.

David is described as white, five feet ten inches tall, of slim build, with short mousey brown hair that is shaved at the sides and back, but longer on top. He also has a short beard and bushy eyebrows.

Officers from the police, including dive teams, are continuing to carry out targeted searches of the Poole Harbour area and are assisted by HM Coastguard, the RNLI and volunteers from DorSAR and Wessex Flood and Water Rescue Unit.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched and police are working alongside the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in accordance with established protocols.

A 19-year-old man from the Southampton area has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour, of Dorset Police, said: “Our multi-agency search efforts are ongoing to locate David and there will continue to be a police presence in the harbour and surrounding areas.

“We are continuing to keep David’s family updated with any developments and are doing all we can to support them at this difficult time.

“We are carrying out enquiries to establish what happened in order to help us locate David and would urge anyone with information that may assist our searches to please get in touch urgently.”

Manslaughter?!

So, he didn't so much fall as was pushed?

I wonder if it was the nautical equivalent of dangerous driving which has caused David to be flung from the RIB? I suspect there were others on the vessel whose testimony has allowed the police to bring this charge, but who knows. It is an interesting development, and one I didn't expect.
 
A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a missing British sailor fell overboard from a boat.

David Haw, 24, has not been seen since he plunged into the chilly water of Poole Harbour, Dorset, at 2am yesterday.

David had been onboard a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) that was taking him back from Poole Quay towards Parkstone Marina when he toppled into the water.

It is understood that upon falling in he was fully clothed but not wearing a life jacket.

He had reportedly been in Poole for the weekend for a sailing regatta involving keelboat racing at the time he is feared to have drowned.

Dorset Police today announced that they have arrested a 19-year-old man from Southampton for manslaughter who remains in police custody.

Extensive searches have been carried out in the Poole Harbour area, with police specialist dive teams supported by HM Coastguard, the RNLI and volunteers from DorSAR and Wessex Flood and Water Rescue Unit.

Superintendent Gemma Morris, of Dorset Police, said: “We have carried out intensive water and land-based searches of the Poole Harbour area over the past two days with air support.

“These searches have been informed by extensive technical modelling and expert input and we have used significant resources with support from our partner agencies to thoroughly search all the areas identified but very sadly we have so far been unable to find David.

“While both the wide and targeted searches are now complete, we will continue in our efforts and enquiries to find David and will respond to any information that becomes available to us.

“We are keeping David’s family fully updated and our thoughts remain with them at this time.

“I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the search operation for their tireless support over recent days.”

Dorset Police received a report on Monday at 1:59am that David Haw, from Forest Row, had fallen off a rigid inflatable boat (RIB). An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident was launched with Dorset Police working alongside the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in accordance with established protocols.

A 19-year-old man from Southampton who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has been released under investigation as enquiries continue, police said.

 
When reports of a man going overboard from a boat in Poole Harbour were first heard, in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday, an extensive multi-agency response was launched in Dorset. Helicopters could be both seen and heard along the coastline, multiple police and coastal search teams scoured the area of Poole waters.

As efforts to find missing 24-year-old David Haw have been ongoing for over a week, the last water-based searches have been concluded. Police are eager to locate anyone with further information, however for the time-being, this young man is still missing.

As well as a police investigation, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch are conducting searches into what may have happened, they note: "We were notified of a tragic accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning when a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) collided with a navigation buoy in Poole harbour.

"Inspectors have attended the accident site, inquiries are being made and a preliminary assessment of evidence is being undertaken. A decision on whether an investigation will be launched will be taken in the coming days..."
