Body of missing mum found in shallow back garden grave and detectives think her in-laws may be involved

Police made a shocking discovery in the search for a woman who disappeared 15 years ago when the harrowing investigation leads them to the back garden of the woman’s brother in law.

The bones of Natalia Doherty, who went missing in 2003 at the age of 50, were found by detectives in 2015.
Police were filmed conducting the investigation into her disappearance across three years, and their findings will be shown in a new episode of 24 Hours In Police Custody, called Shallow Grave.

Natalia was last seen alive in East Sussex on April 15, 2003. She had gone to visit her estranged husband Gerald Doherty at the Regent’s Arms in Luton, and stayed with him at his brother Daniel’s home in the same town.

Gerald took his own life in July the same year on the couple’s wedding anniversary.

In a case reminiscent of a famous storyline from Channel 4 soap Brookside which involved a body underneath a garden patio, detectives unearthed her body under a pile of rubble in the back garden of a house in Luton.

It’s all a bit confusing, but think that the ex-husband confessed to his brothers and then died, and the brothers were tried for preventing a lawful burial etc, and at some point the Judge directed NG verdicts be given but one of the brothers did get a suspended sentence for lying about Natalia’s death.

Another possible confusion may be caused by the fact that Natalia was known by two surnames, Doherty (her married name) and Wilkanowska, which I assume was her maiden name.

Lots of related searches come up which relate to the Channel 4 series, 24 Hours in Police Custody, I remember watching this but don’t know if it is on catch up or somewhere else, definitely worth watching, I think this case was during episode 3 or 4, if I recall correctly.
