An emergency incident is unfolding in Bath this afternoon after a woman with a bag approached people who then fell suddenly ill. Police officers, paramedics and fire crews are at the scene.

The incident happened in Stall Street at around 2.30pm this afternoon, Monday, July 29. This is a live blog and we will be keeping you updated below.

Avon and Somerset Police said: "Emergency services are responding to an incident in Bath. At around 2.30pm, a woman approached people with a bag, leading to some individuals feeling unwell. The ambulance service made us aware at 3.08pm.

"As a precaution, emergency services personnel are wearing protective clothing. We are working with South Western Ambulance Service and Avon Fire and Rescue Service at the scene and have well-rehearsed plans for responding to such incidents.

they haven't revealed any of the symptoms experienced - just that people suddenly were unwell
I'm interested in the symptoms and obviously hope everyone will be ok

The first thing I thought after hearing about this is that Bath is only about an hour's drive away from Salisbury and the Porton Down lab!

I hope authorities get to the bottom of this and find a motive.2 incidents in the UK within hours/days of each other.

There has to be either an utterly innocent story or a twisted, complex horror tale. This is so bizarre.

I wonder how or why the 73year old was not affected by the contents of the bag

I think it’s interesting (and perhaps quite convenient) that other big stories have taken over here in the UK and we’ve heard nothing more about this. Is it because there are serious national security issues and it’s been kept quiet? Is it because it was nothing at all, just a panic?

I have been wondering this, too.

Interesting that the article states 'Police inquiries will now continue to establish whether a crime was committed'

It wouldn't surprise me if this is completely innocent. The woman approached multiple people according to witnesses...but only two of those became ill? Over reaction, psychological maybe?

I leaning toward some psychological issue - a 73yo woman approaching people alone sounds a bit odd to begin with, let alone "with a bag" that makes people apparently sick. I am very curious what was in the bag. but at this point, I'm not thinking this is a crime against UK. People are jumpy, though.

Maybe the woman didn't know what was in the bag, she'd found it and was trying to ask people if they knew what it was.

Perhaps the bag belonged to someone she knew and she was worried that it might contain drugs.
Maybe she didn't want to go to the Police because she didn't want to get the person she knew into trouble if it was something harmless.

Just guessing.

Woman released after 'noxious' bag incident

A 73-year-old woman has been released after being arrested on suspicion of administering an unknown noxious substance.

"It would appear this was an isolated incident and there was seemingly no intentional attempt to harm anybody," said Ch Insp Scott Hill from Avon and Somerset Police.

"Further enquiries will be carried out" by officers, after the woman was released under investigation.
