You might have seen this is the news when it happened as the houses collapsed.
Couple charged over death of two-year-old boy in gas explosion

Sharon Greenham, 51, and Darren Greenham, 44, are accused of the manslaughter of George Arthur Hinds.

Lancashire Police said a criminal investigation assisted by gas experts revealed the blast had been caused by a gas pipe which had been cut in the property next door.

George died as a result of the blast at his home, while his parents, Vicky Studholme and Stephen Hinds, were also injured and later discharged from hospital.
Following the investigation, four arrests were made.

The Greenhams, who now live in Ambleside Avenue, Lancaster, have been charged with manslaughter and theft.
They will appear at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on January 12.

Why would someone cut a gas pipe?

Why would someone cut a gas pipe?

It's just a guess on my part, but based on this quote from the first post "charged with manslaughter and theft", the suspects cut into the utility company's supply line in order to steal the gas rather than pay for it.

Darren Greenham, 45, cut the gas pipes at his council house in Heysham, Lancashire in the hope of selling the copper piping for scrap, Preston Crown Court heard.
