JACQUELINE ANSELL-LAMB (18) & BARBARA MAYO (24)

Jacqueline Ansell-Lamb and Barbara Mayo were two young women who were murdered in separate incidents in 1970. Both women were last seen hitch-hiking along motorways in England, and both were sexually assaulted before being strangled to death.

Although the murders occurred seven months apart (Ansell-Lamb in March 1970 and Mayo in October 1970) and a considerable distance from each other, investigators suspect both murders were committed by the same perpetrator. DNA has only been isolated in Mayo's case and there is no definite link between the two.

What we know about Ansell-Lamb's murderer:
Jacqueline was last seen in the company of a "smartly-dressed, business-like" man at a transport café on a junction off the M6 motorway in Warrington. They left in a car that was possibly a white Jaguar.
Her dead body was found, partially clothed and posed, a couple of days later in isolated woodland in the village of Mere, nearby to the M6.
She had been strangled, sexually assaulted, and had fought with her attacker.
Carpet fibres were found on Jacqueline and a carpet exhibition had been held in London that weekend. Police believe her killer may have been a carpet salesman or worked in this industry.

What we know about Mayo's murderer:
Unfortunately, very little. Barbara's body was found in isolated woodland in the small village of Ault Hucknall, nearby to the M1 motorway. She had been posed and her naked body was covered in her coat and freshly fallen leaves. She had also been strangled and sexually assaulted, and had been battered around the head.
Her distinctive yellow bag with a red elephant motif was missing from the scene.
Police believe her murderer was familiar with the Ault Hucknall woods, i.e. local to the Chesterfield/Mansfield area or a regular visitor there.
A witness claimed Mayo entered a white Morris Traveller car in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, 20 miles from where her body was dumped. The driver, a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, had "mousy hair, brushed forward with a quiff", and was of "medium build". Police traced the drivers of every Morris Traveller car in the country and yet, this man was never found.

Crimewatch piece on the murders (1991):

Photofit of the man seen giving a lift to Barbara Mayo just 20 miles from where her body would ultimately be discovered.

I have started this thread in the hope of inspiring people to suggest and propose their own interesting ideas, thoughts, and theories, this being quite a personal case for me. Unfortunately, Barbara and Jacqueline are often forgotten about in such discussions as they are usually, incorrectly, lumped in with potential victims of Peter Sutcliffe or Tobin, yet DNA has ruled both of these out, at least in Mayo's case.
