Police are appealing for help to trace a man who is missing from Downham Market.

John Boyd, aged 77, and from Wimbotsham Road was reported missing to police today (Tuesday 4 January 2022).

John was last seen at approximately 1.30pm this afternoon outside the Iceland store on Wales Court in Downham Market.

John is described as white, approximately 5 ft 9, of slim build with grey receding hair. He is believed to be wearing a green coat, tan coloured trousers and brown shoes.

John is considered vulnerable and officers are concerned for his welfare.

John Boyd, 78, from Wimbotsham Road, was last seen at 1.30pm on Tuesday outside the Iceland store on Wales Court in Downham Market.

He is described as white, approximately 5ft 9, of slim build with grey receding hair.

Norfolk Police are concerned for his welfare as he is considered vulnerable.

Anyone who may have seen him or knows of his current whereabouts should contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting incident 210 of January 4.

Police are continuing to search for a vulnerable 77-year-old man who is missing from Downham Market.

John Boyd, of Wimbotsham Road was reported missing to police yesterday (Tuesday 4 January 2022).

Officers are currently being assisted by Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue Team, and a number of resources have been deployed as part of the search operation, including two drones.

John was seen at approximately 1.30pm yesterday afternoon (4 January) outside the Iceland store on Wales Court in Downham Market.

A further sighting has been confirmed along Maple Road in Downham Market at approximately 7.30pm last night.

John is described as white, approximately 5 ft 9, of slim build with grey receding hair. He is believed to be wearing a green coat, tan coloured trousers and brown shoes.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen John or knows of his current whereabouts to contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting incident 210 of yesterday’s date (4 January 2022).

The family of missing Downham man and former Salvation Army officer John Boyd,77, are hoping for his safe return as townsfolk head out in their droves to look for him.

Nigel Boyd, John's son, said that his father "regularly goes for walks" and usually has a GPS tracker fitted, but on this occasion "forgot to take it with him".

Nigel said: "We are worried and hope for his safe return. He has always been very independent, and the GPS tracker usually alerts us to his whereabouts.

"He has carers and my mother is his primary caregiver, she is overwhelmed by the community's help."

Police were spotted in the early hours of this morning combing through the Willows Nature Reserve near the train station.

Diane Boyd, John's wife of over 50 years said she is "grateful and overwhelmed" by the number of people who have decided to join the search and "can't thank them enough".

A Downham woman named Erin was part of one of the search parties last night, she and another walked miles all over Downham including mud tracks and car parks.

Many others have taken up the search and are reporting their efforts on social media.

Mr Boyd has a rare form of semantic dementia that causes issues with speech.

His son said: "His form of dementia causes issues with the frontal lobe and speech, so anyone other than family may find it hard to communicate with him."

Downham's Mayor Jenny Groom has praised the "fantastic" efforts of residents in the search for missing man and former Salvation Army Officer John Boyd,77.

She said: "This is a very worrying time for John's family and friends, particularly as the weather has taken such a cold turn.

"As someone who has worked so hard for others, I hope that his family get some comfort from the fantastic support that members of the community have shown to help him at his time of need.

"We all hope that John will soon be found safe and well and I would like to thank all those who have volunteered to help in the search. A fantastic effort from our local community."

Members of a search party organised by two Downham residents Erin and Paul met at the Town Square at 5pm last night to co-ordinate a search of the town.

Downham's residents continue the search for missing Salvation Army Officer John Boyd,77.

Posters have been put up all around the town's focal points, and in neighbouring villages.

Downham's council posted to Facebook earlier today with a statement that said: "To support the ongoing search teams, the council have placed a gazebo as a general headquarters by the clock tower, where searchers have been meeting on the hour, every hour as a contact base.

"We are asking anyone who may have information of his whereabouts to contact the authorities.

"We remain hopeful as the search continues and wish to see John arrive home safe and well, thank you to all of those who have extended a helping hand during this ongoing search."

The search for a missing pensioner was continuing today.

John Boyd, 77, was last seen near his home in Downham Market on Tuesday night.

Volunteers from Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue were out in pouring rain, combing fields and hedgerows on the outskirts of the town for any sign of Mr Boyd.

Dressed in their red uniforms, members spread out to concentrate on an area of land alongside the A10 on the east of Downham.

My Boyd, who suffers from dementia, was seen near Iceland on Wales Court, in the town centre.

A missing Norfolk man discovered in a London hospital was taken there by British Transport Police officers who were oblivious to a massive four-day search going on to find him.

Police forces will discuss whether there are any 'lessons to learn' in the case of John Boyd, who suffers from dementia.
