The hunt for a convicted killer on the run from Maghaberry Prison is receiving help from police in the Republic of Ireland.

Gardaí said they were assisting the PSNI in their search for John Clifford, who failed to return to prison on Sunday .

John Clifford, who raped and murdered his eight-year-old niece Sue Ellen Clifford, was allowed out on day release from a Belfast prison last Sunday.

But the 56-year-old failed to return and instead boarded a train bound for Dublin, being seen in Balbriggan in north county Dublin on Tuesday, reports Dublin Live.

Clifford was jailed in 1989 for the rape and murder of little Sue Ellen, whose body was later found by disused railway tracks near her Newtownabbey home.

Clifford had been released from Burren House on the Crumlin Road, Belfast, for an appointment, but did not return on Sunday evening as expected.

THE youngest daughter of notorious on-the-run paedo child-killer John Clifford fears he could kill again in a twisted “act of revenge.”

She told how she has been left “absolutely petrified” after the serial abuser fled custody on Sunday.

Police have also told her, she said, he has “nothing to lose” if he was to target another child, but they believe he is too unwell to carry it out.

Is this normal to give a murderer a day pass for an appointment?

It says he was near the end of his life sentence. Why would he do such a stupid thing as run? I read he has cancer and is not in good shape. Wonder if he thinks he will die immediately and chose to hasten it along by using his energy to run?

Oh, I so hope he doesn’t hurt any children!

Why would he have gone to a childrens hospital? Is he looking to re-offend? Go out with a bang. Get the last word? This is sooo scary! I cannot believe they give someone with that history a pass to go out alone. Even his daughter thinks he would be likely to want to commit another crime. Jeepers... keep all your kids locked up at home!
