Circumstances of Disappearance

Rigby vanished from his family home at Beckside Farm, Beckside, in Cartmel in April 1995. At the time Marcus disappeared he told his family that he was going to look for work in Dorset and would contact them within a week of arriving. The family never heard from him again and despite sightings in Lancaster, Preston, and Manchester, they do not know where he is or why he disappeared.
He was last heard of at a guest house in Weymouth six months after he disappeared. Police followed up the lead when he paid for accommodation with a cheque that bounced. Since then the trail has gone cold.

Marcus Rigby was 27 yrs old when he went missing on 17 April 1995 from his home town of Grange-over-Sands near Cartmel in Cumbria. He had met up with his mum, to tell her he was heading to the West Country to make a fresh start. He promised he would be in touch in a week’s time once he had settled in. Unfortunately, that call never came. It was established he stayed with his aunt for a couple of days then headed to Weymouth to look for work.

The last confirmed sighting of Marcus was six months after he disappeared at a Bed & Breakfast on Artists Row in Portland, nr Weymouth in Dorset. The location came as no surprise to his family as he is a very keen and talented broad spectrum artist, including charcoal drawings and clay sculpting.

Marcus is described as being 5ft 11in, of slim build and with brown hair. There have been numerous sightings of him over the years, all in and around the Weymouth area. His family have made the journey to Dorset many times to extensively search and make enquiries in the vicinity. They are desperate to hear from him and know he is safe as he is very much loved and is missed dearly. Each year the family buy him a Christmas present in the hope he will return.

His appeal was printed on milk cartons nationwide when Missing People charity launched the campaign in the UK. In 2007, he featured on BBC Missing Live, Series 4, Episode 10 where several phone calls were received, but unfortunately nothing substantial. He was also included in the haulage trucks campaign where missing people photographs and details were printed on the side of the long distance vehicles.

If you have any information that could help with the investigation, please phone Cumbria Police on 101 or any other local police station. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on ‪0800 555 111‬ or use their online reporting tool. 17th April 2008 - AN APPEAL for information has been launched on the 13th anniversary of a man's disappearance on his way to Weymouth.

Man missing for 13 years | Bournemouth Echo

14 December 2015 - Find The Missing: Marcus Rigby

For every birthday and every Christmas that passes, Marcus Rigby's family buy a present he does not open. In 20 years, he has not come home.

Marcus - or Marc to his loved ones - disappeared in 1995, after saying he was "going away" and would "phone in a week." The call never came.

His mother, Mary Ratcliff, last saw him on the day he vanished. Marcus asked Mary to meet him at Capernwray Bible College in Lancashire, where he lived and worked.

As she arrived, he was leaving. Mary sensed something was wrong and offered to give him a hug, but he pulled away and they parted.

Friends and loved ones have spent two decades trying to find Marcus. They are convinced he is still out there to be found.

If you think you have seen Marcus Rigby, or want to get a message home to searching relatives, call the Missing People Helpline on 116 000. The call is free and confidential.

Find The Missing: Marcus Rigby

Dorset Police are appealing for help in identifying a man who was found in Weymouth near the seafront on Wednesday 28 September 2022. His age is unknown but he is believed to be between 40 and 50 years old. When he was found he had long, curly matted brown hair and a long brown beard. He speaks with an Eastern European accent, and it is believed his first language is Latvian.

Cleary the Latvian language aspect makes it unlikely that the man is Marcus, but a number of people have raised it as a possibility.

Marcus was 27 years old when he went missing on April 17, 1995. He first left his home town of Grange-over-Sands near Cartmel in Cumbria, after telling his family that he was heading south to make a 'fresh start' and that he would be in touch in a week.

Sadly, the family never heard from him again. They later learnt that he had headed to his aunt's house for a couple of days and then went to Weymouth for work. There was a final sighting of Marcus, six months after his departure, and that was a bed and breakfast on Artists Row on Portland.

Marcus, an artist, left behind a son named Daniel who was 6 years old at the time of his disappearance, and his mother Mary has often spoken out about how all of the family yearn to see him.

The family are said to have received numerous reports of 'Marcus' being seen over the years around Dorset - however, these are unconfirmed. Marcus's disappearance has been featured on a variety of appeals, with some information citing that he may refer to himself as Marc Smith. Marc is described as being 5ft 11in, slim build and with brown hair.

'At the time he went missing, Marcus was described as 5ft 11” tall and of slim build, with hazel eyes and brown hair. He would now be in his mid-50s. Marcus’ sister Sam, describes him as extremely kind, lots of fun, light-hearted and someone who loves a good joke.
Over the years, there have been many sightings of Marcus in the Weymouth area, including several possible sightings in the wake of a 2007 appeal that his mum conducted through Missing Live.
Marcus’ family want to remain respectful of his autonomy and his choices and understand that he may wish not to return to the family. However, the family desperately want to hear from Marcus, even just to let them know he is okay, with no pressure for anything more.'
