Still missing apparently ...hopefully she's just needing some time alone.

We are appealing for the help of the public to trace a 49-year-old woman reported missing from Cumbria who is believed to have travelled by car to Scotland.

Mary Monkman, from Kendal, was last seen around 7am on Friday, 16 June, in the town.

Enquiries suggest she travelled in her red Nissan Juke, registration L400 MGM, to the west bank of Loch Doon in Ayrshire.

She is described as around 5ft 10ins with long, wavy auburn hair which she often wears in a bun. Mary also wears glasses. It is not known what clothing she is wearing.

Chief Inspector Alison Wilson said: “Mary has not been reported missing before and concerns are growing for her welfare.

“I am asking anyone who has seen Mary or might know where she is to get in touch. If Mary hears about this appeal then I would encourage her to contact us or her family so we know she is safe and well.

“We believe that Mary drove past the Roundhouse Café at the north end of the loch and south past Loch Doon Castle. I would ask anyone who was in the area in recent days to check their dash-cam. Likewise, anyone walking in the area and who may have seen Mary should make contact with us.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 2648 of Saturday, 17 June, 2023.

“Mary travelled alone in her red Nissan Juke from Cumbria to Loch Doon in Ayrshire, Scotland on Friday afternoon and her car has now been found and retrieved.

We have search teams, police dogs, drones and helicopters searching the area and we are desperately trying to get in contact with her.”

On Friday 16th June at 17:34pm we unfortunately lost all contact with our beloved Mary Monkman who is the co-owner of our business as well as the accountant and all-round wonderful person and mother to her three children.

Mary has now been missing for 4 days, we are desperate to have her back with her husband, children and family.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support at this time.

Her colleagues, as well as her family, have not been able to establish the reason for the disappearance.

Mary's sister-in-law Melanie Denyer said although officers are on the scene in Scotland, Kendal residents could provide vital information for the investigation.
“One focus of the investigation is trying to find Mary's backpack as it is a very bright, distinctive turquoise backpack,” she said.

Family of missing businesswoman issue appeal for information as search continues

In looking at Mary's FB, it doesn't seem that she is a hiker. What would prompt her to drive for 3 hours to go to that lake? Does she have an interest in lake scenery or castles? (I didn't see any photos of either in her FB page.)

It seems that she got out of her car and took her backpack with her. If she was "just" going to walk into the lake to drown herself she likely wouldn't take her backpack. Many people who plan self-harm leave their personal belongings in their car. Was her phone left in her car? Were they able to ping it to the lake? If so, how long was it on?

One week on since she was last seen, we are re-appealing for any information that may assist in tracing a woman missing from Cumbria.

Mary Monkman, 49, is believed to have travelled to the Loch Doon area of Ayrshire in her car, a red Nissan Juke, registration L400 MGM.

Mary was last seen driving near to Loch Doon around 4pm on Friday, 16 June, 2023.

She is described as being around 5ft 10ins with long, wavy, auburn hair which she often wears in a bun. She wears glasses and was last seen wearing a green and white floral top and blue leggings, as pictured.

Inspector Jennifer McCulloch said: “Officers, assisted by other resources, have been carrying out extensive searches in the area of Loch Doon since Mary was reported missing. Despite these efforts and previous appeals, we have yet to trace Mary.

“This is a very difficult time for Mary’s family as it is completely out of character for her to go missing. We are continuing to search the area in which she was last seen.

“I would ask anyone who lives in the area or who was in the area on Friday, 16 June, to cast their mind back and see if they remember seeing Mary or someone matching her description in the area.

“I would encourage anyone who has seen Mary since Friday, 16 June, or who has any information on her whereabouts to contact us as soon as possible quoting reference 2648 of Saturday, 17 June, 2023.”

Mary may not be a "quitter", but anyone can hit a breaking point.
I hope she just needed a break and went off somewhere to get away from the pressure of running an active small business. It's tough at any time, but it can also put stress on you and your partner if you run the business together. And, it can put stress on the entire family.

Four weeks on since she was last seen, officers are continuing to appeal for any information that can help in tracing missing Cumbrian woman Mary Monkman.

Mary, 49, is believed to have travelled to the Loch Doon area of Ayrshire on Friday, 16 June, 2023 from her home in Kendal, Cumbria. Her car, a red Nissan Juke, was found parked at the west side of the loch shortly after 7.30pm later that evening.

In a statement released through Police Scotland, Mary’s husband Geoff said: “We miss her so much. She was always coming up with new ideas for work and for home, and they usually started with ‘I’ve just been thinking…’. She can always see the potential, she’s always looking to the future. I have to hope that Mary is out there reading this, somewhere. Mary, if you see this, just know that we love and miss you terribly. Please let someone, anyone, know that you’re OK.”

Those with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 and quote incident number 2648 of 17 June 2023.
