POLICE have issued a fresh plea in their bid to identify a woman found dead on a grassed motorway verge - 16 years ago.
The body of the mystery woman was discovered on the borders of the M45, near Byfield, in Northamptonshire, on April 10, 2002.
A post mortem examination revealed she had swallowed a large quantity of cocaine pellets and detectives believe the victim acted as a drug courier.
Aged between 50 and 65, she may have landed at Birmingham Airport and had links with the West Midlands, officers believe.
Northamptonshire police have only the clothes she was wearing: a rugby top, floral blouse, skirt and shoes.
A sketched artists portrait of the deceased failed to reveal her name but the cocaine carriers scant details have now been placed on the police UK Missing Persons Unit database.
Officers still believe someone from the West Midlands knows this Jane Doe and may know what happened to her.
Of Afro-Caribbean descent, it is clear she endured a tough, painful life.
There was a surgical scar across her abdomen and scars on the inside of both arms.
A long scar also ran along her left eyebrow and there were also two very old scars on her jaw.
The post mortem revealed she was someones mother.
She had a prominent mole between her upper lip and nose.
At the time, the woman was described as black, 5ft 3ins, with distinctive black hair. It had a ginger tint, braided at the back and greying at the front.
