"They said he fought for his life. There were signs of a broken hand, as if he'd given somebody a good right hook. And they found trauma to his ribs and his back, as if he'd been grappling with someone and they'd been punching him in the ribs. Police believe he'd been left somewhere for a week or more before they buried him, because there were fingers and ribs missing as if he'd been ravaged by foxes and badgers. Whoever killed him went back to make sure he was never found."

Discovering the identities of who the police suspect were the two main culprits dealt a great shock. Both individuals are now deceased and cannot be named due to legal restrictions; however, Russell maintains frequent interaction with the grandchildren of the two men suspected of murdering his grandfather, admitting, "They are people I have daily contact with. It came as quite a blow actually".

The report says:
"...Mr Hartley said it had not been possible to establish the exact timing and location of Mr Swinscoe's death.

He said the last "reliable sighting" of Mr Swinscoe was at his workplace on 20 January 1967.

Family members had also recalled Mr Swinscoe last being seen at a pub early in 1967, the inquest heard, but they were not sure exactly when this was."

Up until now, it was said that he was last seen at the pub:

"His last known sighting was at the Pinxton Miners Arms, a pub that was popular with the local mining community before it closed and was converted into a house.

He was last seen giving money to son Gary to buy a round and then left to use the outside toilet.

He just remembers his dad giving him a 10-bob note - telling him to get a round and then never ever seeing him again," Mr Lowbridge said."
