A man was found dead at a North Wales quarry after being reported missing from home, an inquest heard. Patrick Cahill, 53, was reported missing from his home on Cae Glas in Old Colwyn, Conwy, on March 14, 2020.

An inquest held at Ruthin County Hall today heard the support worker's family became concerned when he was not at his flat and alerted the police. At the time, North Wales Police said they had “significant concerns” for Mr Cahill’s wellbeing, and issued a public appeal for information about his whereabouts.

North Wales Police was assisted by North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR), who searched the surrounding area. On March 15, the day after Mr Cahill went missing, a police helicopter located a man's body at Llysfaen quarry near Llanddulas.https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/inquest-held-after-anglesey-man-24549362

At an inquest John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales east and central, said mountain rescue teams were called to the quarry to assist North Wales Police in recovering the body. Rescue crews used specialist equipment to gain access to the site and police officers identified the body as that of Mr Cahill, with his death confirmed at 6.35pm on March 15.

The court heard Mr Cahill had experienced mental health issues and alcohol dependency during his life but was employed as a support worker at the time of his death.

[...]

The court heard Mr Cahill was found near a steep ledge which measured around 30 feet in height. Police officers at the scene reported Mr Cahill's position as being "consistent with having jumped from the top".

A post-mortem conducted by Dr Mark Atkinson ruled the cause of death as multiple injuries. The coroner noted that Mr Cahill "had not given his family any reason to be concerned about him" prior to his death, nor had he indicated that he wished to end his life.

Mr Gittins recorded an open conclusion. He added: "I place on record my very sincere condolences to the family of Mr Cahill in these very tragic circumstances."
