A mother who fed her four-year-old daughter sedatives under the guise of "Smarties" because she was an "inconvenience" to her love life has been jailed for 13 years.

Michala Pyke, 38, gave little Poppy Widdison drugs to sedate the youngster which she referred to in text messages as "blue Smarties".

Poppy was later found unresponsive, blue and not breathing in the home Pyke shared with her drug dealing partner John Rytting, 40, in June 2013.

A post mortem into her death proved "inconclusive" but doctors traces of a drug cocktail with heroin, ketamine and sedatives including diazepam in her hair follicle.

Poor little mite. I'm actually surprised she got as much as 13 years, but I still don't think it's enough. If the mother's been inside since it happened she could be out in 3 years....

That poo child. She deserved better than a mother that would treat her so horribly.

Why did the mother even bother with putting on an act for the authorities? Why didn't she send Poppy to live with the father? Was she also using the child for money through child support payments?

Poor, poor, child. If she was born an addict why wasn't she given proper attention by the authorities. What a tragic life for a child.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC described how Poppy was born a heroin addict and existed in a 'swamp of drug addiction', and how her mother had a 'deplorable attitude' towards an 'innocent infant'.
