Robert Steven Jones, who is known as Steven, has not been seen for a number of days.
Family and frieds are becoming increasingly concerned about the 57-year-old from Y Felinheli, whose car was found parked at South Stack near Holyhead on Sunday afternoon.
Four lifeboats scoured the western coast of Anglesey after a member of the public found an abandoned rucksack in the area yesterday.
The search was called off as darkness fell at about 4.30pm on Sunday, but police say it will resume when weather conditions improve.
Mr Jones is described as being of slim build and approximately 5ft 7ins tall, and has short dark brown hair. He is said to be wearing a black Berghaus jacket.
