Background: in 1974 Lord Lucan (Wiki), estranged from his wife and children, returned to their home intent, apparently, on killing his wife; after entering he encountered a woman he thought was she, and attacked and killed her. It was the nanny, Mrs Rivett. His wife soon appeared and Lucan beat her savagely although not fatally. He then disappeared, his crime noteworthy, his being a lord of the realm, and soon a topic in popular culture (see video below, a later cover of the Dodgems' 1978 single), and national memory. At the time it was correctly pointed out that if, say, you or I killed someone, the headlines would read that we were sought for a vicious murder; bowing to Lucan's lofty title, newspapers of the time summoned forth headlines which only proclaimed him "missing."

much more, with pictures and a sidebar, at link aboveA woman has revealed Lord Lucan was living a secret life in Africa in the 1980s after he went missing.
The theory has been confirmed by a former detective detective who said he received a tip-off from a credible witness that Lucan was living on the continent.
The mystery surrounding his disappearance after 38-years has led to more than 70 sightings of him in countries like South Africa, Australia, Ireland and the Netherlands.
At one point he was also reported to be living in a Land Rover with a goat called Camilla in New Zealand.
But now the woman, who worked for one of his gambling acquaintances, the late John Aspinall, has revealed to the BBC she arranged flights for his children to Africa so he could view them 'from a distance'.
