There were cries of “yes” from the packed public gallery when the foreman delivered the verdict while Hall remained emotionless in the dock, dressed in a black suit, white shirt and a black tie.

Adjourning the case so the prosecution can get victim impact statements, Mr Justice Coe said: “You have been found guilty of murder and the sentence is one of life but I have to set the minimum term which you will have to serve before you will be eligible to apply for parole. I will sentence you on Tuesday of next week and until then you will be remanded into custody.”

A KILLER who hatched a gruesome plot to pretend his ex was still alive as she lay dead in woodland is facing life in jail for murder.

Darren Hall, 36, used Sarah Henshaw's phone to text her friends and neighbours to say she had voluntarily left her home.

In reality, the mum-of-two was lying dead 20 miles away in a lay-by on the A617 near Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

Hall has now been convicted of murdering 31-year-old Sarah at her home in Ilkeston.

Derby Crown Court heard how the couple met in 2011 before breaking up six years later.

Although they reunited in 2022, the relationship was strained and Hall was violent towards Sarah.

[...]

Hall was remanded into custody ahead of sentencing on Tuesday.

Case called on

The case has been called on and the public gallery is full inside courtroom one. The press and police officers have been moved to the jury box to accommodate the number of people wanting to be in the hearing. Hall is appearing over a video-link from HMP Nottingham due to an administrational issue at the court.

'Dumped like a worthless piece of rubbish'

Miss Helley has read out a third statement, this time made by Lorraine Henshaw, Sarah's mum. In it she said: "Sarah was my first born and I loved her. The worst day of my life was finding out she had died. Even now she has gone I still feel her spirit and I miss her laugh and her kisses on my cheek. Sarah's death has been a living nightmare for me and I wish I could wake up and she was still here. Not only did Darren Hall kill her, he dumped her like a worthless piece of rubbish. It was a monster that committed this evil, he did not love Sarah."

Life with a minimum of 17 years

Mr Justice Goss has handed Hall a life sentence with a miniumum term of 17 years until he is eligible to apply for parole. He said: "Sarah Henshaw was 31 years of age. She was loud, energetic, a fun-loving person with an infectious laugh. She was caring and loved her family and by your actions you have cut short the life of a much-loved person and her death has caused immense loss and the harm you have done and the suffering you have caused can never be undone by the sentence of this court. I cannot accept you have genuine remorse for killing her as you still protest you did nothing to hurt her (but) I accept there was no premeditation and no intent to kill but you clearly ignored her screams and used sufficient force to cause her death."
