The wording is interesting.

'We are still supporting the woman involved as our investigation is ongoing to engage with her to understand if any offences took place in different circumstances'

Is this a case of someone witnessed something that looked non-consensual but actually was consensual?

That's the only thing I can think of that would make sense.

Or did something consensual happen that a significant other wouldn't appreciate and so a cover story explaining away evidence of intimacy was provided to that individual who then reported it to authorities not knowing it was false?

I thought that too, maybe the 'victim' had told someone she'd been raped, like a friend, and they called the Police, but now it seems that was not the case.

Blinking Herry!! 😱
This is absolutely horrific is she has "cried Wolf"
All those women too scared to report their abuse, all the women who reported but weren't believed, all those who were believed but never got justice... And all those THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of women who STILL live in fear after an assault like this ..
And this one making this huge accusation that (appears to be) false.. I could swing for her and anyone who knew she was lying right now!!
This REALLY makes me angry!! 😡

Was the 'good Samaritan' a red herring?

Good question. Did she not come forward because she doesn't exist?
that is my guess. If she was a ficticious part of a story told by victim to a third party to explain her "escape" from the fictitious rapists. Then despite the alleged victim's requests to the contrary the third party went on to report the incident as they understood it to the authorities.

But per the DM in post #2, the police said "We are supporting the victim with specifically trained officers at this extremely difficult time." Do you think the woman went home, partner asked where she was/why she got home so late, she said she was gang-raped, partner insisted they go to the police together, and that's when her story fell apart? MOO I could see that being the case.
