Officers are appealing for information to trace a 26-year-old man who has been missing on Ben Nevis since Tuesday, 11 April, 2023.

Zekun Zhang was last seen around 1pm near the summit of Carn Mor Dearg, and is believed to have walked a route from here to the Ben Nevis summit.

He had planned to return to the North Face car park, but did not return.

Zekun is described as 5ft 8in tall, of medium build with short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black and grey boots. He was also carrying a black rucksack.

Police Sergeant Dawn Grant said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have seen Zekun to contact police immediately.

“In particular, I would urge anyone out on these walking routes on Tuesday, and today, who may have heard or seen something that will help us find Zekun to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident number 2342 of Tuesday, 11 April, 2023.

A search for a student missing on the UK's highest mountain has been suspended for the night after no trace of him was found.

Rescuers say hopes of finding Zekun Zhang alive are fading.

"In fact the wind chill would have plunged the temperature to minus 8C. He was not well equipped to survive those conditions. He was basically wearing what he was pictured in.

"We re-traced his whole route today without any sign of him and there has been fresh snow. Obviously at this stage hopes are fading, but we will consider what to do again in the morning."

Police have now confirmed that a body of a man was discovered on Ben Nevis at about 3.30pm today.

Formal identification is yet to take place but Mr Zhang’s family has been made aware.

Inspector Ross McCartney said: “I would like to thank all mountain rescue teams that assisted with the search.”

My deepest condolences to his loved ones. What a handsome lad, and he had great boots, showing he was a sensible young man, prepared for his hiking, but Ben Nevis is one of the most challenging and treacherous climbs in the world. Zekun’s loss won’t be in vain, this alerts younger, newer hikers and hill walkers to always prepare for the worst case scenario.
