UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A Utah County man is facing charges after allegedly placing his 4-month-old baby into scalding water, causing third-degree burns over much of the infant’s body.

Matthew Nielsen Beck, 41, was arrested Sunday on the count of aggravated child abuse, a third-degree felony, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.

In the report, officers mentioned that the child's mother, also a registered nurse, was not called until after an hour of the incident. Beck also did not call 911 after the child was burned.

In an interview, Beck claimed the baby got burned during a bath, but his wife contradicted the statements, stating he had turned up the water heater months ago and used water temperature to punish their children.

"Matthew took the infant to another bathroom where he ran cold water over him and put cold wet towels on him. He spent almost an hour trying to cool the infant down and rubbed petroleum jelly on him. The infant's skin continued to come off as he rubbed him, tried to cool him down, and put the petroleum jelly on him," according to the affidavit.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, this 41-year-old man allegedly abused his children more than once with burning-hot water, and their mother knew this?

It really bothered me that Mom knew what he was doing, and she still stayed there with the kids. I am sure she felt trapped---but if she knew her cruel husband turned the water heater up higher so he could burn their kids---she's got to get them out of there one way or another...
I hope he loses custody forever and isn't given more chances to harm the children, who must be so traumatized.
Agreed.

and she, a registered nurse, still left her children with him?

and a 4 month old needs punishment for what?

Beck's wife, who was not home at the time, told detectives Beck previously put another infant child in a tub of extremely cold water "until he turned blue" as a form of punishment, and allegedly stated "this would 'toughen him up,'" the affidavit states.

"When confronted about using cold water as a punitive action against another son when he was also an infant, he initially suggested that he did it to improve the child's circulation. After continued questioning, Matthew admitted that he did this to the infant as a form of punishment."

Why is this mother not being charged? He has a history of punishing infants with cold or scalding water. She admits she knew this? Why should she get a bye?

And the mother should lose parental rights as well. Let those kids be with real parents who will cherish and protect them. I have a problem with women who let their partners abuse their children.

Don't get me started on the "Dependent Personality Disorder" defense ala "Hedda Nussbaum".

And the mother is a nurse?! A licensed professional with a duty to report abuse of children! Take that license and throw it in the trash.

I had the pleasure today, of caring for a newborn. So precious and sweet. A four month old baby doesn't need "punishment". Tears for this little one.

Bumping case up. I will keep an eye on it. I can only find articles from 2023 so assume it has not yet gone to trial. Can anyone find anything about a trial or plea deal?
Furthermore, was the mother ever charged with anything, which I believe would have been appropriate? Did she keep her nursing license?
I wonder how the baby is doing now. He will have lasting trauma, poor baby.

unfortunately I cannot access court records in UT :(

No new updates for this case. I too want to keep an eye on this one. I agree, that mother needs to be charged. She knew of the father's history of using extreme water temps to punish another child and she not only created more children with this awful human but continued to leave him in charge of their infant?

What on earth does a 4 month do to warrant punishment? ridiculous.
