Details of Disappearance
Boone disappeared from Utah in August 2021. He went missing with his dog, a brindle pit bull mix named Lily with a blaze on its chest. He also had Cooper, his brother's dog, whom he had taken without permission. Photos of both dogs are posted with this case summary.
On August 3, after Boone's van got stuck down in the San Rafael Swell area, a couple picked him and Lily up. Boone was reportedly severely dehydrated and the people who picked him up took him to a fire station, where a medic checked his vital signs to make sure he did not need medical attention. He left most of his belongings behind in his van, including his wallet.
A police officer paid for Boone to stay the night at a hotel in Huntington, Utah, since he had no money. The officer also told him that his family was looking for him; they had contacted the local authorities due to Boone's concerning mental state and disappearance. Sometime in the night or early the next morning, August 4, Boone left the hotel. He went to a nearby convenience store and spoke to an employee there, who gave him water for Lily.
He then stole a garbage truck, drove it to Carbon County, Utah, then abandoned it and stole a Jeep Renegade. He went to a cellular phone store in Moab, Utah to purchase a phone, but couldn't get one because he lacked money or identification, and he had a confrontation with a man there. After this he stole water in Thompson Springs, Utah, then abandoned the Jeep at Interstate 70's mile marker 221 in Cisco, Utah.
After that what happened to him is unclear. He may have been sighted in the Nucla, Colorado and Telluride, Colorado area later in the month. Three weeks after Boone's disappearance, his brother's dog Cooper was found alive and alone in Emery County, Utah. There was no sign of Boone or Lily.
In May 2023, a hiker found Boone's guitar, backpack and poncho on the San Rafael Swell, in a remote desert area about thirty miles from where Cooper had been found. About a week later, the same hiker found more items belongings to Boone, including his watch and phone, about 300 feet away from the original find. Everything was weathered and sunbleached and appeared to have been there for a long time. No other trace of Boone or Lily have been located.
Boone had previously been convicted of arson for setting a fire during a 2018 manic episode. He was psychotic at the time and trying to send a signal to his daughter, who lives in Australia. He spent six months in jail for the offense, then was released on probation and ordered to complete a mental health treatment program.
Boone's sister believes he left the hotel on August 3 because he overheard the police officer who'd paid for his room speaking on the phone with his probation officer. He was not in violation of probation at the time of his disappearance and the probation was supposed to end on August 6, after which he could get his criminal record expunged.
The circumstances of Boone's disappearance are unclear, but due to his mental health issues he's considered to be at risk. His case remains unsolved.
